After releasing her new single Girl From Rio on April 30th, the Brazilian pop star Anitta presented her new song to Today Show, NBC, and Jimmy Kimmel Live, ABC. Fusing traditional bossa nova with trap melodies, the single pays tribute to Brazilian women and samples the '60 hit "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl From Ipanema"). The lyrics of the English-language track show a fewer glamourous Rio than the one delivered by Bossa Nova to the world in 1962. Girl From Rio has a great summer vibe where Anitta presents her perception of her hometown.

Anitta is already a super pop star with great numbers. On Instagram, she has more than 53 million followers, 30% of them from outside of Brazil. Ryan Tedder is the producer of her new album, the fifth in the singer career. In a Billboard interview, he said the work he had to go deep, to understand the Brazilian culture and Brazilian Funk, the urban rhythm that came from favelas of Rio. In the same interview, Anitta shares her goal of making Brazilian Funk known worldwide like the Latino reggaeton become last years. Tedder explained Brazilian Funk is entirely new and unknown for North Americans and has nothing to do with Funk as we know here in the USA.

Music Video

Directed by Giovane Bianco, who worked with names like Madonna, Giselle Bundchen, Caetano Veloso, and Cher, the video giving it a retro-inspired look to present two faces of Rio. The video shows men and women in different body shapes, flirting, and having a typical day at the beach. Part of it was shooting at Piscinão de Ramos (Ramos Big Swiming Pool). Ramos is the neighbor where Anitta had her first concert for Year's Eve in 2012. In 2020, the Brazilian pop star was invited by Univision to sing at Times Square on new year's eve.

Women Empowerment

For the lyrics, Anitta worked with Tor E. Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen, recording producers and songwriters known as Stargate, who worked with names like Mariah Carey Ne-Yo, and Katty Perry. One more time, Anitta brings her women empowerment message, also seen in other of her songs.

Honório Gurgel forever (sou eu)

Babies having babies like it doesn't matter (ah, é)

But the streets have raised me, I'm favela (demais)

Baby, it's my love affair, it's my love affair, yeah (hey, hey)

I just had to leave another lover (mais um)

Yes, he couldn't handle my persona (não fala)

'Cause I'm cold like winter, hot like summer (yeah)

Baby, it's my love affair, it's my love affair, yeah (yeah, yeah)

Honório Gurgel, mentioned on the track, is the neighbor from where she comes, the place she was raised. Anitta's family is in the music video. When they worked on the lyrics, Anitta knew about another brother of her the family found out, another son of her father who never had to contact them before. By Stargate's suggestion, they did tell its story on the single in this part of the lyrics.

"Just found out I have another brother (hey)

Same daddy, but a different mother (had a brother)

There's something that I always wanted

Baby, it's a love affair, it's a love affair, yeah (yeah, yeah)."

Cardi B

The first single released from the new album was Me Gusta (I like, in Spanish), where she sings with the rapper Cardi B and Myke Towers. The video shooting for this song was in Salvador, Brazil. On Youtube, Me Gusta has more than 118 million views since last September. There is no official information of when the whole album releasing will happen, but some websites expect it for June. For now, Anitta is staying in Miami to fulfill the launch commitments. As this album is aimed at the international market, there are no songs in Portuguese, only in English and Spanish.
