Randie O’Neil Finds Herself Among the Shadows on Haunting New Single “Ghost of Me”
The award-winning Americana/Folk-Pop songwriter turns personal heartbreak into an evocative exploration of emotional abandonment.

There is something really unsettling about being ghosted. Without explanation or closure, someone who once occupied an important place in your life simply disappears, leaving you to make sense of the silence.
For award-winning singer-songwriter Randie O’Neil, that experience provides the emotional foundation for “Ghost of Me,” a haunting new single accompanied by a suitably atmospheric music video that explores the lingering effects of rejection and the struggle to reclaim the parts of ourselves we sometimes lose in the process of loving someone else.
“I was literally ghosted on my birthday,” Randie explains. “I felt so empty and lost. You think you found someone, take that chance and they just can’t give it back.” It is a painfully recognisable scenario, but what makes the song particularly interesting is its potential to look beyond the immediate hurt. The absence of another person can leave a peculiar void, one that forces us to confront not only what we have lost but also how much of our own identity became invested in the relationship. In that respect, “Ghost of Me” becomes a story of personal recovery as much as romantic disappointment.
Randie has built her songwriting around an openness to difficult emotions, drawing on personal experience and her work as an adolescent intervention specialist to explore the challenges that shape our lives. Her own childhood experiences of surviving an abusive alcoholic environment have informed her understanding of vulnerability, resilience and healing, subjects that have surfaced throughout her catalogue. From the emotional weight of “These Walls” to the powerful narrative of “Olivia,” which addresses domestic violence and the courage required to escape it, she has consistently demonstrated a willingness to confront uncomfortable realities through music.
“Ghost of Me” continues that thread, although its approach is rooted in the unsettling atmosphere of heartbreak. The accompanying video, filmed at dusk in New Hope, Pennsylvania, draws on the town’s reputation for ghost stories to establish an appropriately eerie setting. As the daylight fades, Randie walks through the shadows, creating the impression of someone searching for a presence that has vanished. The imagery works on two levels: there is the person who has disappeared, and there is the more personal search for the self that remains after their departure.
Interestingly, Randie did not have her usual creative team for the shoot, instead taking a chance on a new group of collaborators. With two videos filmed in a single day, “Ghost of Me” was captured at the very end, as dusk settled over the location. That sense of immediacy lends itself to the song’s emotional uncertainty, with the fading light providing a natural backdrop for a story caught somewhere between longing and anger.
The latter surfaces in the line “Shadows knows your name,” which Randie describes as angry, carrying the suggestion that disappearing does not necessarily absolve someone of responsibility for the hurt they have caused. It is a welcome complication to the song’s melancholy, allowing resentment and vulnerability to exist alongside one another rather than presenting heartbreak as a neat, easily resolved experience.
With “Ghost of Me,” Randie O’Neil continues to find songwriting inspiration in the moments when life leaves us feeling most exposed.
Her latest release acknowledges the emptiness that follows rejection while recognising that recovery begins with the difficult work of finding ourselves again. Sometimes the most persistent ghosts are not the people who leave us, but the versions of ourselves we must learn to bring back.
