Inspired by fellow Vocalite (I'm making that a thing) Emily Keeler's piece, "5 Music Videos to Help You Feel Just A Little Bit Better."
Psychedelics are elating and stimulating. These mind-altering drugs enhance the beauty around us, and videos can be a great way to maximize this ethereal experience. There are a lot of wonderful options, so here's a list of 25 to try the next time you're under the influence.
Some of these videos were actually designed to be watched on hallucinogens, while others just happen to be great for tripping. I think most of them are pretty cool sober, too.
1. A$AP Rocky - L$D
I'll start with the most obvious: A$AP Rocky's "L$D." An absolute masterpiece. When you're tripping, you can physically feel this video. It's an otherworldly experience.
If you haven't seen this and plan to drop acid, don't watch it until you do.
2. Miguel - Waves Tame Impala Remix
This is a great song, and the video is perfect for tripping with friends in the summer.
3. Mac Miller ft. Kendrick Lamar - Fight the Feeling
My personal interpretation of this one is that it's a crayon running through a coloring book of sorts. Whatever it is, Mac + Kendrick is a stellar combination, and this video plays beautifully on the effects of LSD to create a rainbow-y experience.
4. Annihilation
Annihilation is a movie, so it would take up a good chunk of a trip, but it's well worth the watch. The visuals in this film are gorgeous. It's got rainbows everywhere, biological mutations that defy reality, and a new take on extraterrestrial beings.
Having said that, this is a cosmic horror film, and there are some scary moments. I watched it for the first time while coming down from LSD and was amazed that it didn't throw me into a bad trip; luckily, I absolutely loved it. People talk about how this movie eerily stayed with them, that they didn't feel normal for days afterward. I had that compounded with the drugs. If you get freaked out easily or are worried you might have a bad trip, maybe steer clear of this one. For the brave of heart, it really is very cool.
5. Kendrick Lamar, SZA - All The Stars
Stunning.
6. Jalen Santoy - Foreplay
Even if you don't do drugs, this song is worth the listen.
7. A$AP Mob - Yamborghini High (ft. Juicy J)
I was today years old when I learned that A$AP Mob exists. I definitely spent years thinking this was just A$AP Rocky.
8. Chet Faker - Gold
These women are incredible.
This is another one of those videos that I would put off watching until you're tripping (unless you never plan to).
9. Adult Swim - Color
"Hey, y'all. Have you ever seen anybody make a rainbow with a 12-gauge shotgun? Now ya have."
Adult Swim has a bunch of these videos, but this one has always been my favorite. It really sucks you in.
10. Selena Gomez - Rare
Rainbows upon rainbows. I'm convinced that she made this after trying hallucinogens.
11. Lil Dicky - Pillow Talking feat. Brain
Another masterpiece. This one's age-restricted, so you'll have to click "Watch on YouTube" and be logged in to see it! It's long (11 minutes), but definitely worth the watch.
12. Mac Miller - Gees (ft. ScHoolboy Q)
One of my favs. A bit derogatory toward women, but a colorful video for tripping.
13. Taylor Swift - ME! (feat. Brendon Urie)
I gotta be honest, I hate this song. But the music video is all rainbows, making it the perfect color-enhancing pick for T-Swift fans.
14. Adam Lambert - New Eyes
Groovy song, video about psychedelics, Adam Lambert looking sexy. Perfect.
15. Dua Lipa - New Rules
I just love the colors in this one.
16. Travis Scott - goosebumps ft. Kendrick Lamar
This is another video that you might want to avoid if you're worried about a potential bad trip. It's really cool, but it's definitely got darker vibes.
17. Ed Sheeran - Beautiful People (feat. Khalid)
Ed Sheeran's "Beautiful People" isn't particularly stimulating visually, but it makes me really happy, and it's good to be cheerful when you're on drugs. If you feel yourself getting freaked out mid-trip, give this cute video a watch.
And peep Ed at 1:50.
18. Bazzi - Mine
Good song, cool music video.
19. Travis Scott - HIGHEST IN THE ROOM
He's so creative.
20. Eazy Mac - Tortured Genius
"The following program is in described video for the visually impaired. It is also suggested that you listen to it under the influence of heavy drugs. Thank you."
21. Mac Miller - Dang! (feat. Anderson .Paak)
A bright, vibrant video from a bright, vibrant man. I miss him.
22. Trippy Animation
This one's kind of sad, but it's beautifully done.
23. Kungs vs Cookin' on 3 Burners - This Girl
Another happy video! This one's sure to make your senses tingle.
24. Russ - What They Want
I know Russ is an asshole, but I love this song, and the video is so pretty.
25. Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite
I mean-
I had so much fun making this list. What are your favorite trippy videos?
