My Review of "Yesterday"

A movie that makes you question our own motivations.

I thought that Yesterday had a very interesting premise when I first saw its trailer. It took me a while to finally watch this movie but I'm really glad that I got to see it. It's a clever and fun movie that was more than what I thought it was going to be.

The trailer had me think that it's simply a movie about a man that suddenly wakes up in a world where no one knows who the Beatles are. He then capitalizes on this fact and writes the songs as if they were his own. The trailers were half true and I like the fact that they didn't give too much about this movie.

The main character Jack has been trying to make it as a musician ever since he was in elementary school. He and his best pal Ellie have been trying to get gigs and now he's a full adult and no one is looking to hire him. Now he works part time at a warehouse and Ellie is a school teacher.

Their dream is still alive but Jack is starting to lose hope. He's given all hope and is just about to quit when there is a huge blackout. Unfortunately for Jack, during the blackout he was riding his bicycle back home. He gets hit by a bus and gets put into the hospital.

When he wakes everything seems fine. His friends even make fun of him because he's missing teeth. Soon he discovers that no one has ever heard of the Beatles.

This discovery was well done because it's just as I would expect anyone react if they discover one of the most popular artists never existed. A lot of the fun in this movie is the genuine reactions from the actors. The way they react are so genuine and authentic.

There's a scene where Jack tries to play one of his "new" songs to his parents. It was so funny because it's genuinely how everyone's parents would react. You have to remember he's still nothing at the beginning of the movie.

I love how they make a statement about how people react to you when you are a somebody and when you're a nobody. There are so many truths to this movie. They talked about many aspects of what artists go through in such a short period of time. It was pretty impressive.

They also delved into the music industry and its shortfalls. How would the Beatles' songs be portrayed in today's musical climate? What would the industry do to change the songs and the vision of the songs.

This movie even goes so far as eliminated some of the things that the Beatles had influence on. So certain products and events no longer exist because the influence of the Beatles no longer exist.

By the end of the movie Jack starts to ponder what is actually important in his life. How can he live a successful life and what is a successful life? I mention before that this is a movie that explores the concept of motivations. While I was watching this movie I was starting to think what his motivations were to become an artist. Was it to be with his friends or was it to have fame and fortune? As the movie progressed I started to question the motivations of a lot of the characters. Was this actually a movie to make us look at the big picture of our own lives? I didn't expect this movie to produce so many meaningful questions about life.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fun and interesting ride. The movie made me question my own motivations in life. I love it when movies do this to me. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. I will be recommending this movie to a lot of my friends.
