G-Funk is an exclusive YouTube documentary that came out back in 2017. I kind of wish that more people knew about this documentary because they tell us things that really needs to be told. There are a bunch of stories in there that might not be well known that should be known because of its unsung heroes.

This documentary starts off with a group of young kids from Compton. They talk about Warren G. This guy is pretty much an unsung hero in hip hop and G-Funk in general. At the time he was growing up hip hop of course was the music of choice. He loved the music and wanted to pursue a career in the genre. Still in high school he gets into contact with a bunch of other likeminded youth. One of the friends he meets up with went by the name of Nate Dogg and the other was Snoop Dogg.

Together the trio formed a powerful friendship and made a crew called 213. As a crew they were killing it. Warren G wasn't exactly the best rapper but he was a great music producer. Nate Dogg turned out to have a really good voice and turned out to be the singer of the group. Then there was Snoop Dogg who was a rap prodigy. He was able to rap about pretty much anything at anytime.

The three were doing well but they wanted to push it to the next level and to do that unfortunately they had to do some unsavory things. That is until Warren G's father married a woman who's son turned out to be Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre had talent and some history in the music industry and Warren G tried to help himself and his friends by having Dr. Dre hear them out.

Dr. Dre liked what he heard and basically created a music production company with a guy named Suge Knight. They signed on both Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg but Warren G was never signed. It was a little weird since Warren G was instrumental in helping out with many of Dr. Dre's work.

In this documentary we see the ups and downs that Warren G had to deal with during his rise to stardom. It's a little sad because a lot of us know who Warren G was but we don't all know the full contributions that he had made to create the style of hip hop called G-Funk.

G-Funk is also known as Gangsta Funk. It was basically created by the trio because they loved the music their parents listened to. The music they listened to was funk predominantly made by George Clinton and the Parliaments. This music was heavily sampled for their songs and remixed so that it could be updated with the times.

There's no way you've never heard a G-Funk song in your life. They explain how popular Snoop Dogg's songs were in his early career. They've pretty much become popular culture at this point and it's such a shame that Warren G was never credited for much of the work that he did.

They had a lot of interesting testimonials from a lot of special guests. Some that you wouldn't expect to make comments and some that you kind of expect. I was shocked at some of the stories and with others I was kind of aware of. Still I think a lot of people generally wouldn't know much of their story.

If you are a fan of hip hop music especially west coast hip hop music you have to see this documentary. There's a whole slew of information here that will keep you gripped to your seats. I'm not sure if people that aren't really into music would be able to keep their attention to this documentary though.

Overall, I really enjoyed this documentary although there are a few lulls only because I already knew the information that they were explaining. Still it was a nice blast from the past to watch this. I have to give this documentary a 7 out of 10. I'm a fan of the music so it was a good time for me.
