Usually, we choose songs we like by the melody, the lyrics, and by the musical genre. I’m starting a series with songs from all kinds of genres going according to the alphabet. Here are songs with titles that begin with the letter V. Links will be posted below as we proceed through the ABCs. “Vacation” is a fun song that brings me back to my youth and times spent at beaches in the summertime. This was recorded in 1962 by American pop singer and actress Connie Francis. It became a Top-Ten hit for her, The song was written by Francis, Gary Weston, and Hank Hunter. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts.

A wonderful melodic song “Valleri” was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for the American pop band The Monkees. It quickly charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and rose to number one on the Cash Box chart. In 1986 when three of The Monkees Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork reunited on tour they frequently featured this song.

Among the songs I enjoy “Vanilla Sky” is a song that was recorded by British singer, songwriter, and musician Paul McCartney. He wrote it for the 2001 film of the same name, The song won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Song. A live version of it is featured on the 2002 album Back in the US.

A lovely and romantic ballad “Venus” was written by Ed Marshall. The song became the most successful and best-known recording by American singer and actor Frankie Avalon. The single came out in 1959 and went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became Avalon’s first number-one hit. In 1976 Avalon released a new disco version of “Venus” but the original remains a classic.

“Vaya con Dios (May God Be with You)” is a lovely melodic song that was written by Larry Russell, Inez James, and Buddy Pepper. It was originally recorded by American jazz singer Anita O’Day in 1952. In 1953 the most popular version was recorded by the popular American husband and wife musical duo. This version went to number one on the Cash Box chart. Their recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. My favorite version is the one recorded in 1976 by American-Tejano singer and songwriter Freddie Fender.

“Vienna” makes me wish I could travel there and see it all for myself, The song was written and recorded by American singer, songwriter, and pianist Billy Joel. It is featured on his 1977 album The Stranger. He was inspired by visiting the city and his father, who left the family when Joel was a child.

I have always enjoyed the song “Vincent” written and recorded by American singer and songwriter Don McLean. It was written as a tribute to the well-known Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The first line of the song refers to the painter’s 1889 painting “The Starry Night”. The song came out in 1971 and is featured on McLean’s album American Pie, The song charted on the Easy Listening chart and was at number one on the UK Singles chart.

An interesting song is “Volcano” performed by American singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffet. The song was written by Buffet, Keith Sykes, and Harry Dailey. It came out as a single in 1979 and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts. It is featured on the album of the same name, The song was written in a calypso/reggae style. Both the song and album were named for the Soufriere Hills Volcano on Montserrat Island in the British West Indies where Buffet recorded the album in 1979 at AIR Studios. During Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the studio was destroyed and in 1995 Soufriere Hills erupted again.
