Duke of Earl

Monarchy In The UK seemed a good play on the Sex Pistols "Anarchy In The UK" for a vaguely British Royal Title based playlist. It's hardly ground-breaking but a bit if fun. There will be a hell of a lot that I miss off and where the artist is the one with the Royal title you will probably disagree with my choice, but you can easily make your own up and then share it with me. In fact I would love you to do that.

The YouTube playlist is here.

I am going to lead with Gene Chandler’s “Duke Of Earl” because it combines two admittedly male royals in the title but is a great record from across the pond.

So here we go

Prince - Purple Rain

I could choose almost any song by Prince Rogers Nelson who we lost in 2016 and everyone will have a better one. This is going to be true of almost all of these posts except where the song is the star so to speak.

Princess - Say I’mYour Number One

This Stock Aitken Waterman-produced classic reached number 7 in Princess' native UK, and was a top 10 hit in Switzerland, Australia, the Netherlands, and number 2 in both Germany and New Zealand.

Her real name is Desiree Heslop and in the early 1980s, she worked with the group Osibisa.

Queen - Killer Queen

Well Queen is the band and the song is also named after a Queen so it is a double hit. This is not my favourite Queen song, I’m not really sure what is, but the thing I liked about Queen is that they didn’t give a damn about fashion or being cool. They just did what they wanted, and their fanbase was fine with that..

King - Love and Pride

I always thought King were a second division band , there were certainly a lot worse, and “Love and Pride” is acceptable, but does not have a place in my vast record collection that I know of.. The band was formed from the remnants of Coventry rock-ska band The Reluctant Stereotypes and took their name from the surname of lead singer Paul king.

King Charles - Lady Percy

We get a King and a Lady in this and my daughter Kirsty alerted me to this band whose lead singer dressed in a definite regency garb while playing guitar. King Charles is the alter ego of Charles Costa an English singer-songwriter from West London. He plays the guitar, piano, and cello. and is also a classically trained singer. He began writing songs when he was 17.

In 2009, he became the first British person to win the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, for his song "Love Lust" which appeared on his debut album. The competition was judged by Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Loretta Lynn, and Jerry Lee Lewis, and following this victory King Charles was signed by Universal Republic/Island.

Lady Gaga - Poker Face

I am not really a follower of Lady Gaga but enjoy most of her work including her acting and she was great in “American Horror Story: Hotel”. Again any song of hers could have made the list, but this is excellent and deserves its place.

Screaming Lord Sutch - Dracula’s Daughter

David Sutch was the 3rd Earl of Harrow, or as Screaming Lord Sutch, was an English musician and serial parliamentary candidate. He was the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections. He holds the record for contesting the most Parliamentary elections, standing in 39 elections from 1963 to 1997. He also managed to rope in many big-name musicians to feature on his very not very good albums.

Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl

Gene Chandler was born Eugene Drake Dixon; on July 6, 1937. He is an American singer, songwriter, music producer, and record-label executive and is still going, nicknamed after his biggest hit.

And finally

The Stranglers - Duchess

The Stranglers emerged via the punk rock scene. Scoring some 23 UK Top 40 singles and 19 UK Top 40 albums to date in a career spanning five decades, the Stranglers are one of the longest-surviving bands to have originated in the UK punk scene.

Duchess is from the album The Raven. It peaked at number 14 in the UK Singles Chart. The supporting video for the song was banned by the BBC, as they deemed it blasphemous for its content, which featured the band dressed up as choirboys, but it is included on the Yofoutube playlist.
