“Create the soundtrack for the ultimate Halloween party.”

Not just a challenge. A challenging challenge.

Halloween, after all, doesn’t have the same wellspring of music as Christmas, yet a party requires more than a single song, like a “Happy Birthday” for a birthday party. And what of the tone? A Halloween party, conceivably, includes a wide range of participants – children, boisterous adults, wallflowers, the undead – each with their own musical tastes.

Well, challenge not only accepted, but pwned!

I have compiled a playlist that treads the fine line between outright horror and lightweight scares, between the child-like and the darkly cynical, between pull the covers up over your head and, “just plug the candy into my veins!!”

Friends, here is Lloyd’s Uber Scary Halloween Playlist.

1. The theme from the movie “Halloween” – One should start by setting the atmosphere right off the bat (ha ha, bat!), and what better way than to begin with the haunting, rolling piano that leads in to the granddaddy of slasher flicks?

2. Theme from “The Addams Family” – That first track has you on edge, watching everywhere for something or someone to leap out, butcher knife in hand. Dude, it’s a party, so let’s pull it back a bit by bringing out the snappy ode to the creepy, kooky Addams Family. It’s all about keeping things level.

3. “Ghostsbusters” by Ray Parker Jr. – So now that we’ve cracked open the fun side of Halloween, let’s jump right in with the beloved “I Want A New Drug” for the spooky set! Who you gonna call? We be calling you, RPJ, we be calling you.

4. “He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)” by Alice Cooper – Just when the party promises to skew away from scary we bring it back to its roots with this track from “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives”, an ode to everyone’s favourite killer goalie, Jason. Alice Cooper tried to warn you here, kids, and now you’re toast. Ki-ki-ki Ma-ma-ma indeed.

5. “Turkish Song Of The Damned” by The Pogues – Wait, how can a jaunty Celtic tune possibly be on a Halloween playlist? 10 words – “the dead have come to claim a debt from thee.” Shivers.

6. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson - … and speaking of the damned… This may perhaps be a cliché selection, but the Vincent Price monologue is Halloween perfection.

7. “Worms” by The Pogues – Ever wondered what happens when you die? Scholars and Christian apologists have argued for ages on this very topic, but all can agree that the worms get a pretty decent meal out of it. Eyes falling in, teeth falling out, brains tumbling down your snout… that just sounds like Christmas all over, doesn’t it?

8. Theme from “Casper the Friendly Ghost” – Shake off the dreary feeling of your own impending death and have a little fun with Casper, who technically has already been through the whole worm feast on his own body but still came out smiling.

9. “The Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers – Heading to the finish line with this ear worm (I should get paid by the word “worm”, ya think?), a blast from the past about a Halloween party FOR a Halloween party! Trippy, no?

Now how do we wrap this party up? By playing the most frightening song of all time. The song that sends shivers down the spine of even the bravest of souls. The song that sends you home questioning how the devil himself could coat his evil essence on each and every note.

10. “I Love You” by Barney the purple dinosaur – The most horrific act of any dinosaur on film, even more horrific than the T.Rex that feasted on the lawyer’s head in “Jurassic Park”. I am so sorry for unleashing this unholy blasphemy on to you.

You wanted scary. Be careful what you wish for.

Happy Halloween trails,

Your ever-lovin’ Lloyd
