Lesbian Songs to Add to Your Playlist

10 Songs For Your Sapphic Playlist

Everyone wants to listen to music they can relate to; that we can listen to it and make it ours. This is especially so when it comes to songs about identity and love.

I personally have a playlist titled "wlw" on my Spotify full of lesbian themed songs, and some of these songs are also found in my playlist that reminds me of my girlfriend and/or my writing playlist (since all my main characters are gay or have girl love interests).

When you listen to a playlist enough, however, it's common to want to add more songs and create more of a variety. That being said, finding songs with Sapphic themes can be difficult if you're looking to explore and find new bands/artists. Of course a song can mean what you want it to mean, meaning that if you want a song to be about you and the girl you're crushing on or love, it can be. But there's something special about a song actually being about girls who like girls. It's like getting to see yourself in a book or movie. Representation matters.

I've picked 10 songs from my playlist that aren't quite as popular yet as the iconic "Girls Like Girls" that also vary a little bit in genre if you're looking to broaden your music horizons.

"California Friends" - The Regrettes

"California Friends", in my opinion, has a lot of gay energy. In the song, there's a lot of confliction about the singers love for an unnamed person, and the way that she sings about it reminds me of what it's like being a girl with a crush on another girl.

"I think I love you but then I think

No way!

You gotta go but I wanna stay

Just stay!

I guess I'll save it for another day

Well okay!"

Additionally, it's a fun, upbeat song that is catchy, making it great for singing along and vibing with it.

"Forever For Now" - LP

LP is one of my favorite queer artists. All of her music is honestly great, but I picked this one because it's one of the songs that's on both my wlw playlist and my playlist that makes me think about my girlfriend.

With a lullaby-like sound, the song is actually kind of melancholy. But I find it sweet, and to me when she sings "it won't last forever", I see it as more of a commentary of mortality than an ending relationship.

If you like "Forever For Now", I also recommend checking out "Lost On You" and "Strange".

"Make Me Feel" - Janelle Monae

"Make Me Feel" is a song that slaps. It's the perfect song to jam to while you're getting ready to go on a date or go spend time with your girlfriend (or wife). I'm new to Janelle Monae, so this was the first song I listened to of hers, and I fell in love with it right away.

"Flirting With Her" - Sir Babygirl

I was introduced to Sir Babygirl listening to my favorite podcasts, "Dyking Out", when she was a guest.

"Flirting With Her" captures what it's like having a crush on a girl and flirting, all those feelings that you're left with as you're falling asleep at night.

"Work Song" - Hozier

So "Work Song" isn't directly about lesbian love, but it has the energy and feeling of wlw romance. I mean, Hozier is our favorite bog man possessed by a lesbian witch, right? In all seriousness, Hozier is an amazing LGBT ally and his music has so much meaning to it.

I picked "Work Song" in specific because it's such an enchanting love ballad; to me it has Sapphic meaning.

"That Thing" - Hazel English

I guess I've kept up a theme of love songs in terms of my lesbian top 10 songs, but this is another great one! I love Hazel English's soft sound in "That Thing". It's so sweet and pure, and it's another one that fits whether you're in a relationship or just crushing on an adorable girl.

"Sports" - Beach Bunny

"Sports" reflects what it's like having a crush on someone who keeps "playing games", so to speak. This is on my lesbian playlist because it reminds me of (although I haven't experienced it, but people I know have) when you have a crush on a straight girl and she knows it and is kind of using you/playing with your feelings. Like I said, not a personal experience but I have friends who have.

That aside, I also think this exemplifies that general stress of being a girl who likes girls. Is she straight? Is she gay? Is she flirting or just being nice? Etc.

"i wanna be your girlfriend" - girl in red

"I wanna be your girlfriend" is definitely gaining popularity through TikTok. This is another one of those "lesbian experience" songs about having a crush on a girl and wanting to be more than friends.

I really love girl in red, and this is the song that introduced me to her about a year ago. You can really hear the yearning and pining in her voice as she sings "I don't wanna be your friend, I wanna kiss your lips".

It wouldn't surprise me if girl in red becomes as, if not more, iconic as Hayley Kiyoko.

"She" - Jen Foster

"She" by Jen Foster is one of my favorite lesbian pride songs. In this, Foster calls out the hypocritical "love is blind" view that people have and explains that who she loves is valid. Love is love is love is love.

I used to listen to this one a lot more, it's on a playlist that I listened to religiously after graduating high school. It really helped me become comfortable in my identity as a lesbian as well as referring to my girlfriend as my girlfriend to people in public.

"Jessie's Girl" - Mary Lambert

Mary Lambert's cover of "Jessie's Girl" is on the same playlist I found that "She" in on. I love the lesbianified version of this that Mary Lambert created. It really does put a new meaning to the classic song.

Hopefully, after all of this I've introduced you to a few new songs or artists that you can add to your Sapphic playlist, or even caused you to make a playlist of these songs. I personally think it's important to have a little playlist that relates to who you are and who you love even if it strays from the typical genre you listen to.

Happy listening!
