Is Drake’s Id Replacing his Superego Status?

Is the Canadian losing his ability to be self-critical?

From the Trap & B compilation album Her Loss (2022), 21 Savage and Drake pour out their souls on everything from paying for women to live the lavish life to denying them funds and leaving them cold.

But the most pertinent aspect of the effort is Drake’s stance. Apparently, no more is he the man on the white horse riding into the sunset. He is not the heroic knight in shining armor, especially in the song “Corco Loco.”

Allegedly, he has drawn the line in the sand riddled with glass and made his case against fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion. In relation to the ongoing case with Tory Lanez, it would seem as if Drake has made the distinction of saying that Megan essentially asked for her position as a victim.

This is a shift from over a decade of Drake portraying himself as the superego. Now, he seems impulsive and ready to do anything for clout.

His rap-singing against Megan is brief but the overarching theme of the project illustrates the hip hop legend as against the winner with the would-be wife. Now, he is still the single dad who knocked up a porn actress and wants you to hate him. Desperately, he is trying to make you disparage his name like that scrub basketball player on the team you loathe.

Over melodic strings and grungy beats, 21 Savage delivers his frosty lines as he always does. Now, the pair seem like two robbers casing a Richard Mille boutique.

Drake’s dark side has him as the “anti-social socialite.”

If this paints Drake as the bad guy, he would have brought it upon himself. His image belongs to Canada, America, and the world but he has shown a new face in this whole situation. With just a few bars, he has set himself up to have his streams fall, his shows suffer, and his endorsements grow skittish.

Drizzy’s good guy smile and overall positive image has slowly eroded from his Thank Me Later (2010) days. Ever since his win against Meek Mill and his stunning loss against Pusha T, Drake has wavered on whether to be a role model or roll over on top of everyone in his way out of a grudge or just on whim.

Loss’s grimey beats match Drake’s ill-temper and enhanced movements toward the Dark Side. He is like Anakin Skywalker who doesn’t fully turn to Darth Vader but he is still deciding on which Force-powered Bugatti to drive. He’s grinning through all of this, though. It’s too much pleasure in seeing his foes beneath him and tempt them to commit the coup de grâce. He still holds a bit of compassion where it ought not be. If he’s going to have enemies it’s his role to eliminate them without compassion.

Instead, he shoots around his opposition with barbed lyrics and vicious verbiage.

21 Savage almost seems to have thawed out in his ice patch, but he provides somewhat touching verses. They actually trade who can be hardore and tender almost in the same breath.

For both of them to keep going on in this direction may be a bonus for Savage but Drake may want to heed caution. He might be alienating his audience with the way he is offering his lines. For him to come out the gate as a leader of the underdogs, achieve rapid success, coast on that success, and only take a few scratches on the way up, he is potentially on the descent.

To re-achieve his apogee, he’s going to have to relate to his base and keep his eyes to the skies while he's still standing on the Earth.
