The music of Sinead O’Connor

Professionally Irish singer and musician Sinead O’Connor was known by this name but she came into this world as Sinead Marie Bernadette O’Connor on December 8, 1966. After she became a success she sold more than seven million copies of her albums worldwide. She recorded ten studio albums with her 2000 album Faith and Courage certified Gold in Australia and her 2005 album Throw Down Your Arms certified Gold in Ireland. Among her work were songs for films, collaborations with other artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts. She came out with her memoir “Remembering” in 2021 and it became a bestseller. Unfortunately, she left this world on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56.

Her debut album The Lion and the Cobra came out in 1987. She recorded that album while pregnant with her first child. The title of the album comes from the Bible Psalm 91:13 "you will tread upon the lion and cobra". On the album the track “Never Get Old” opens with Irish singer, songwriter, and musician Enya reciting Psalm 91 in Irish. The first single from the album “Troy” charted and the second single “Mandinka” became a mainstream pop hit in the UK. Another song “I Want Your (Hands on Me)” was featured in the 1988 horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master”.

The second album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got was released in 1990. It included O’Connor’s version of the American singer, songwriter, and musician Prince's song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. It was released as a single and went to number one in many countries. The album is ranked at number 408 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In 1992 her third album was released Am I Not Your Girl? This album included a collection of cover songs, mostly jazz standards. The title of the album comes from the song “Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home”. This album was dedicated to the people of NYC and especially to the homeless people O’Connor met at St. Mark’s Place. Among the cover songs was “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from the Broadway show Evita.

Universal Mother the fourth album came out in 1994. It included three singles “Thank You for Hearing Me”, “Fire on Babylon”, and “Famine”.

The fifth album Faith and Courage was released in 2000. It was her first release in three years since she came out with her greatest hits album So Far…The Best of Sinead O’Connor in 1997. She composed a majority of the tracks on this album. The album included two singles “No Man’s Woman” and “Jealous”. It was certified Gold in Australia.

Sean-Nos Nua the sixth album came out in 2002. The album consisted of traditional Irish songs with the title of the album meaning “new old-style”.

In 2003 O’Connor came out with a double album She Who Dwells In the Secret Place of the Most High Shall Abide Under the Shadow of the Almighty. It comes in a two CD-set.

Throw Down Your Arms the seventh album came out in 2005. This is her reggae album and includes cover versions of classic roots reggae songs. The album was certified Gold in Ireland.

The eighth album Theology was released in 2007. The first single from this album was “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” which is an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice song from the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar”. The album charted on the Billboard 200 chart in the US.

How About I Be Me (and You Be You)? the ninth album came out in 2012. The first single was “The Wolf Is Getting Married” which was accompanied by a video. The second single was “4th and Vine”. In 2013 O’Connor announced a European tour to promote the album called The Crazy Baldhead Tour.

Her final album I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss was her tenth album released in 2014. This album was nominated for the Irish Meteor Choice Music Prize for Best Album.
