Celebrities who attend music’s biggest night at the 65th Grammy Awards get to leave with something special even if that means sans gold gramophone. Have no fear Distinctive Assets is here with a luxuriously curated Grammy’s swag bag.

Lash Fary, co-founder of Distinctive Assets, known as “The Sultan of Swag,” is the official GRAMMY® Awards gift bag. Lash Fary is responsible for topping himself every year by curating the hottest items in beauty, technology, and lifestyle, as well as helping to propel small business entrepreneurs to the forefront.

I had an opportunity to speak with Lash Fary about the 2023 Grammys Gift bag.

Q: How have things evolved regarding celebrity gift bags during and post-pandemic, and how was your business impacted?

LF: I was very fortunate and there were so many businesses that were impacted. In 2020, I had literally just wrapped my awards season. We did the Grammys and “Everyone Wins” for the top Oscar nominees. Covid was happening but more so in Asia and NY and SF started to be impacted and it hadn’t really come to LA. We had wrapped and I was playing tennis and not working so when the quarantine happened, I was already in my summer vacation mode. Then the following year there was no Grammys in the same sense. It was smaller and we did a gift bag. Most people like Lionel Richie and others were home during the quarantine so we delivered gift bags to them. We made more deliveries to celebrity’s homes during the pandemic than ever before, for the Grammys and all of our events. People were looking for things to do, so having one of our big bags was fun for them and their families to go through and a little extra beneficial perk.

Then 2022 comes around and we think we’re going to be business as usual. During that January timeframe, there was the Omicron re-outbreak. The Grammys decided we couldn’t have it business as usual, particularly going through our surge of Omicron so they decided to change the date. When they decided to push the date that meant their venue was lost and there was no chance to do it at Crypto.com Arena. There were no venues in LA due to the sporting schedules. The only venue available was The Hollywood Bowl as an outdoor venue and with a closed rehearsal that wouldn't work. The Grammys moved to Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and we went with them and did an amazing event at “Top Golf” at the MGM property.

Now that we’re back, this is the biggest Grammys I can remember with the biggest number of acts, number of people, and all of the different activities that are going on, I think people are excited to be back to the new normal, so to speak. We’re here at Tom’s Watch Bar in the middle of L.A. Live next to rehearsals but we can still have that vibe where there are various restaurants to go to, and people can listen to music as loud as they want to but we still have access to everything. It’s business as usual, we’ve got talent rolling through, we’re still delivering gift bags and now things seem to be back to normal.

Q: You’re the leader in the swag bag industry. What’s important to celebrities post-pandemic when it comes to consciousness, awareness, and being more conservative, eco-friendly, clean beauty, etc.?

LF: Partly because of the pandemic I think that a lot of the things that we’re doing in a higher profile way are celebrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and philanthropy. Honestly, I’ve been doing that for twenty years and that’s not new for me. It’s new that people want to talk about it more. I get asked sometimes, “Oh you’re focusing on equity and inclusion, has it been hard to find minority and female-owned businesses to still fill the bags? No, I’ve been filling the bags with minority and female-owned businesses for many years. You just want to talk about it which is fine to shine the light on those businesses that need it. I just think it’s more in the zeitgeist and celebrities have always been at the forefront of that and some of them have always loved giving back. A lot of them are kinder than people realize. We have Skinny SBU Sox, a South African entrepreneur who is such an amazing guy who found a way to get here to the Grammys. As a fellow South African, Trevor Noah took a photo with Sbu. Sbu said that he lived in South Africa his whole life and he had to come all the way to LA, to finally meet Noah at the Grammys, he laughed. Noah loved that he could shine the spotlight on a fellow South African who is doing great things and helping his community. I think most celebrities feel that way. Country music performer Luke Combs came through the Grammys Gift lounge and understood that this is a way for them to help small businesses. Combs has his own eyewear brand and he was taking pictures with TurboFlex Eyewear, he was engaged with them and he said he loves helping businesses that are out there doing good in the world.

Q: Distinctive Assets is known for having cutting-edge technology, and beauty or lifestyle products in gift bags. What are the hot items this year?

LF: There are two robots this year when it comes to tech. We have two different robots and one is from Aiper, the world’s best cordless robotic pool cleaner. You literally drop this cordless robotic into your pool and you can sit back and relax in your chaise lounge and it will literally do all of the cleanings for you. The Seagull series has a unit that actually goes up the sides of your pool walls to clean them. It’s incredible.

From WowWee, they have an adorable "Dog-E" that lights up, its tail wags, and such an innovative product that kids will love it. It was a hit at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and it won’t be available until the fall. Artists here at the Grammys will be the first to get their hands on Dog-E.

Q: You are constantly seeking innovative products for gift bags. What do you see as the next big trend?

LF: Luckily for me, I don’t think about trends. I’m one of those people who believes that everything has a full cycle. People will say leopard is back, but I’m like leopard never left and has been in style since the 50s and 60s. When has leopard not been in style? Never. I love skincare and especially skincare that makes you look your absolute best. I fell in love with Miage skincare a few years ago and they’ve been with us at 3 Grammys so far. Miage is based on human stem cells and waterless molecules. I’m passionate about skincare and especially skincare that works and being able to share these products.

The trends I look for are more so coming from the clients. The fact that this is my 24th Grammys Awards season, (which is crazy when I think about it), and these amazing brands like Aiper pool. We also have at the lounge a gentleman who brought us electric skateboards a couple of years ago. The clients know the value of being here and when they know they’re working with a new brand and they’re innovative and want to get in front of new artists, I’m fortunate that I have a reputation out there in the world and, people know it’s possible to do that here. I get contacted a lot and I’m fortunate enough that I work with brands that like to collaborate. For example, Bugaboo the luxury stroller that everyone wants from the Sex and The City tv series, I collaborated with them in the early days. All the celebrities want the Bugaboo Fox 3 and they’re giving out their $1400 strollers here in the Grammys gift lounge. It’s truly the Rolls Royce of strollers when you push a Bugaboo. I said to them, “What can we do to make this stand out even more? They said they have an initiative with Baby 2 Baby which provides baby essentials to poverty-stricken families. For every stroller that they give out to a celebrity in the lounge, they’re donating one to a family in need through Baby 2 Baby.

Q: If a business or brand wants to be a sponsor or collaborate with you on product placement at the Grammys gifting lounge or one of your other events, what do they need to do or know?

LF: Everyone would love to be a part of a major event but this isn’t a small task. Behind the scenes, I have at least 50 people working delivering gift bags. There are rental vehicles and vans taking products to people’s hotels or homes. I have 13 different vendors present here today and it takes all day to set up and break down. There are costs involved and you have to have a marketing budget to support being here and you have to have a product that makes sense to be here. I get pitched all the time for products but they need to be a good fit for what we’re doing, By the same token, I love including things for men, women, kids, and older adults. We’re pretty diverse in the types of products but you need to provide enough products to gift. We gift about 150 people over the three days of rehearsals and then you need to be able to pay the marketing budget for what we’re offering, and that varies by show and by category. There’s an expense to be in the gift bag and it’s more expensive to be here in person and in the gift lounge. Again, most businesses are accustomed to it. For example, when you attend a trade show as a vendor you have to pay to be present. There’s a booth setup fee and trade show fees, and you have to pay for the people to set up your booth, so it’s the same concept.

Q: What’s next for Distinctive Assets following The Grammys?

LF: Up next, we have the Oscars. The Oscars have not had an official gift bag for 15 to 16 years. Ours ("Everyone Wins") while not affiliated with The Oscars, which is kind of nice, because I get to decide and as much as I love being here at The Grammys, I get to gift everyone on the show, the presenters, the performers, and the Music Cares talent which they call the pre-tel, with 30 artists there that we will be gifting.

For the Oscars, we only gift the top 5 categories Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actor, and Actress and Director. We only gift 25 people and it’s a much smaller lift but globally we get much more press than any other event and it’s consistent. It’s $100,000 to $200,000 per bag and there are luxury trips and experiences and things that people can’t give out to 150 people, but they can to 25 people.

We do a little event for Mother’s Day and then we take the summer off. I think it’s important and life is too short to just live to work.
