The Summer That Got Away

Can someone say, Taylor Swift or maybe Kelly Clarkson even Sara Bareilles? That is the feel these lyrics gave me.

The truest love and pain of youth and innocence. Heartbreak on the cusp of experience, molding how and who we would love in the future.

I can hear a carefree and bubbly melody, dipping into a touching bridge and outro. Maybe leaving the door open to love again.

**

VERSE ONE:

I'd forgotten how it felt

But I'd felt this thing before

That summer my heart melted

For the boy who lived next door

A white t-shirt and muscle car

Parking late nights, by the lake

We promised not to go too far

By summers end, it was too late

**

CHORUS:

I can hear the engine revving

Of that souped up GTO

It takes me back and I'm reliving

Those old songs, on the radio

Our love only lasted a summer

Then you headed down the road

But those memories are forever

And I'll always want to go, home again

**

VERSE TWO:

It was college after high school

And we swore we'd keep in touch

But I knew I was the fool

It was just a teenage crush

Phone calls turned to texts

And soon, no reply at all

I knew what would come next

It was my heart that took the fall

**

PRE CHORUS:

Too young to fall in love, it was a romance of the summer

I always thought you were the one, but you were just a backseat lover

**

CHORUS:

I can hear the engine revving

Of that souped up GTO

It takes me back and I'm reliving

Those old songs, on the radio

Our love only lasted a summer

Then you headed down the road

But those memories are forever

And I'll always want to go, home again

**

BRIDGE:

What is it about 3am

That wakes me from my dreams

The desire to go back again

Making a fool of me

The hands of time was tied

And love slipped right through my hands

I hug my pillow tight

Reliving how it could have been

**

CHORUS:

I can hear the engine revving

Of that souped up GTO

It takes me back and I'm reliving

Those old songs, on the radio

Our love only lasted a summer

Then you headed down the road

But those memories are forever

And I'll always want to go, home again

**

VERSE THREE:

For fifteen years he haunted me

I feared to fall again

But as he fell upon his knee

My mind remembers when

I surrendered to a feeling

To a boy, who never could have been

This man who stands before me

Stirring that love in me, again

**

PRE CHORUS:

Too young to fall in love, it was a romance of the summer

I always thought you were the one, but you were just a backseat lover

I’ve found the love I’d hoped to find, before I knew what true love meant

And he desires to be mine, returning all the tears I spent

**

CHORUS:

I can hear the engine revving

Of that souped up GTO

It takes me back and I'm reliving

Those old songs, on the radio

Our love only lasted a summer

Then you headed down the road

But those memories are forever

And I'll always want to go, home again

**

OUTRO:

Grateful for the lessons now I have all the love I need

You showed me the love you gave, was nothing more than just a seed

Our love lasted a summer

Then you headed down the road

But those memories are forever

And I've finally found my way, home again
