Good Comfort

A playlist & a playbook

My life is sacred because I’ve declared it so.

Comfort, peace and tranquility are the new default settings for my vinyasa flow.

Self care and good comfort are similar but not the same.

I made a playlist on Spotify entitled, “Good Comfort” inspired by this banging Jamaican artist I know.

The distinction- good comfort is a lifestyle. Self care is just a rail car on the pandemic gravy train.

Shenseea sings bold and overstated the peace her body can offer. She praises the front door key to the kingdom that only women can hold.

“To settle the debate between woman and man, God gave women three keys to hold as their own.”

To quote a passage from a Zora Neale Hurston story I was told,

These keys are to the kitchen, the coochie and the kids.

Now, this is an extremely heavy set of keys to be carried.

Which is why a soft life and these key rings must be married.

Blue Flower. Red Thorns.

A line that is on replay in my head before the early hours-- before dawn.

Have you seen Shrek- the first one? This is the impossible quest they sent Donkey on.

Blue flower, red thorns.

Like the blue jays in my backyard or the blue birds I haven’t yet given a name.

Red- like the color of cardinals that appear whenever there are angels near.

A well balanced woman walks the tightrope each day she shines in the face of the sun.

Her daily mission, “celebrate the grind, while prioritizing the unwind."

The old days when earth was paradise is just a day’s journey away.

You don’t have to get ready if you stay ready you -- you know what they say.

Practice good comfort in every moment. How you do anything is how you do everything.

Slowly but surely-- the hectic way of high-tech living will begin to fade to black.

A soft life is a hard pivot.

You sure you're down with it?

It’s more than bubble baths and Dewayne Wade’s new wine.

This extends far beyond face masks and pedicure dates.

Good comfort- foreal- requires you to join the band of “lost ones.”

We are the cohort of peace soldiers who slowly backed out of the corporate corpse race wearing invisibility cloaks.

Ya’ll this thing is so much deeper than bubble bath soaks.

Good comfort comes only when your heart and mind are at peace.

Can you stop the mind from racing and control your thoughts?

Every good day starts with Erykah Badu.--

She warns that “one day all them bags gone get in your way.”

So you won’t be able to self-care perform your way forward.

The only solution is to "pack light."

Literally and figuratively.

Lighten your load. And arm your heart only with love, laughter and light.

My playlist concludes with Bob Marley’s “Easy Skanking.”

Good comfort is here when you’re ready for it, Queen.

-end-

Since the owners of this platform will not allow me to publish this piece unless it hits the 600 word minimum, I'll take up more space. More about the artist that inspired this poetry, Shenseea.

She is, like I mentioned before- -a famed Jamaican dancehall artist who is taking America by storm. She is on popular songs and dominating the underground music realm as well. Throughout my time as a Brooklyn resident, I quickly grew to love Shenseea.

At every carnival, she is the queen of the road. Her music blasted and pumped through every inch of the Savannah Grass in Trinidad during 2019 carnival. Much love and appreciation to the queen who has the vybz like Kartel!
