When it comes to birth control, women end up taking the reins for the most part. After all it is their bodies that will change as well as the responsibility of a child. This thought process has been ingrained for years in the female gender, but it is truly a cooperative responsibility, after all , as the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. Why should the sole responsibility be on the parent who carries the unborn?

Gabrielle Blair, a writer , mother of six, and Mormon who believes in pro choice, actually coined the phrase "ejaculate responsibly". It is post Roe argument that looks away from controlling women's bodies and rights in legislation, and looks to men and sometimes the lack of accountability in preventing pregnancy.

We haven't given a fair shake to men when it comes to preventing pregnancy. Ninety percent of the advertising in the public focuses on prevention of pregnancy geared toward women, yet a male in always on, or always fertile. We have all seen it, men in their 70's and 80's siring children. There is very little out there besides condoms, which change the pleasure they may experience, or vasectomy, which is semi-permanent. This can be reversed, yet it takes a another surgical procedure. On the other hand, women have by mouth birth control, condoms, implants, diaphragm devices, shots, and abstinence among other things that can prevent pregnancy from occurring.

Since Roe v Wade overturned, vasectomies have spiked drastically according to Urologists around the country. Urologists in many states told the Washington Post recently that they have seen a massive increase in the numbers of vasectomy consults, as well as increased traffic on their websites. , and further 60-70% of the men in consult for the procedure mention their decision is based on the overturn of legislation.

Men right now have little choice if they want to prevent pregnancy, either use the condom , obtain a vasectomy or use the pull out method which is only about 75% effective and is difficult at best. However there are new pharmaceutical considerations on the horizon, a pill that is being human trialed this year for men. If we want men to jump on this bandwagon, we need to give them more choices.

There are many facets that play in to this concept. Currently there are 500,000 foster children in the American system. Many will not know a family. There are goals and care in having children, not just to have them. We should all be cognizant of the responsibility of having sex and that this union could produce a pregnancy. It should be simple, however we have many barriers to surmount to get to this shared way of thinking. This ties in with self-esteem, good mental health and unlearning older ways of thinking, that men are the conquers and women are subservient, destined to be in the kitchen and popping out babies. Women, who have unprotected sex hoping to get pregnant, to trap a man, or to show off the baby. they tend to treat children as a novelty. a novelty that soon wears off. They are left alone to provide for the both of them, and resentment and anger follow.

The chemical and hormones one produces having sex truly is fascinating The endorphins that entice the pleasure centers, gives a great feeling almost drug like. Sex should not be clinical, but experienced with knowledge; knowledge of potential consequences, and planning. This is not to say that no-one can have spontaneous sex or be scared to do so, there just needs to be some thought in preparation if it happens.

There are men out there who have and are aware of the accountability and some women who are not. We as a whole need to look at ways we can think differently, to provide the best in our lives, and our children's lives, for there is a future beyond ourselves. I am no fan of Hilary Clinton, however it does take a village, and it would not go amiss to add planning or thinking ahead, something we lack in this age. Entitlement, short versus long term thinking is having an effect on the country. Look for ways, not excuses. Bilateral responsibility comes with work, but it will make a difference in the children that we are bringing in to this world, and our long lasting future.
