ECLECTIC MIX SEPTEMBER 21

The tracks filling my head space this month

Well it’s been a month of real opposites. We continued into a small short heat wave again, and had temperatures hitting the mid 20’s if you can believe it. Yip Scotland (well the central belt) was practically tropical! However like all good things they end, and the wet, windy weather that so stereotypical of Scotland reared its head again. The tree’s green’s gave way to all shades of red, gold and browns, before litterying our pavements and roads. But the flipside, its a great excuse to get used to the colder weather, and wrap up warmer, and take comfort sitting on the couch or being warm and cozy in bed while the wind and rain batter’s the windows.

Before i talk about my playlist for this month, I’d like to mention The Wire. I went back and decided to watch it from the start again. It was also eerie to watch the show as well, as not long after starting the 3rd series, the news Michael K Williams who plays Omar on the show, died in real life from a heroin overdose broke. So watching it has been difficult, but just as rewarding as always. It definitely is in the top 3 shows of all time (in my opinion) and if you haven’t seen it? Then i strongely advise that you do, and i hope to write a future article about the show to sell it to you all ! It has the unique idea that every season of the series has a different version of its theme song ‘Way Down in the Hole’ by Tom Waits. So please enjoy the 5 different intro versions of Way Down in the Hole, as sung by The Blindboys of Alabama, Tom Waits, The Neville Brothers, DoMaJe and Steve Earle:

I still haven’t (not that I’m complaining) been able to stop hip-hop from featuring heavily in my playlists. Perhaps it’s Spotify’s algorithm giving me even more music from that genre to indulge in. Or perhaps listening to this music has just awoken and reminded me of all the great tunes that exisit in this genre! Either way it’s enjoyable as always, and gives me an excuse to let my inner rapper out, for 2 or 3 lines i can spit in time to the music. However don’t fret as this playlist still contains all the randomness that my list’s have become famous for. This list is just as varied as ever, and as always eclectic. This month our ears will feast on Rap, R&B, Trip-Hop, Leftfield, Soul, Dance, Indie, 80’s Classics, Alternative and Rock !

As alway, i can appreciate the list might be quite long. I know i’ve said it many times before, but one day it will be short(er). Also as always i’ve included a Youtube playlist (sorry these are getting longer every month too!) below, which boils down the songs, that are without doubt, in my opinion worth a listen and shouldn’t be missed:

Joan As Police Woman – Take Me Too Your Leader

LEISURE – Flipside

Wolf Alice – How Can I Make It Ok?

Michael McDonald – I Keep Forgettin’

Hayden Thorpe – Metafeeling

Handsome Boy Modelling School – Sunshine (Groove Armada Sunset Dub)

The Smashing Pumkpins – Bullet With Butterfly Wings

Wu-Tang Clan – C.R.E.A.M.

AND a second strictly HIP-HOP orintated playlist to indulge your inner Rapper:

Eric B. & Rakim – Paid In Full

Wu-Tang Clan – C.R.E.A.M.

2Pac – I Get Around

A Tribe Called Quest – Electric Relaxation

Xzibit – Paparazzi

A Tribe Called Quest – Find A Way

This months list features A Tribe Called Quest, Hayden Thorpe, Orlando Weeks, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Wu-Tang Clan, Wolf Alice, Joan As Police Woman, 2PAC, Thundercat, Michael McDonald, Xzibit, Definition of Sound, The Human League, Eric b. & Rakim, Royksopp, Midlake, LEISURE, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tears For Fears, Happy Mondays, Tame Impala, Handsome Boy Modelling School, Bibio, The Sugarcubes, Sex-O-Sonique, Donna Allen, Bonobo, Kool & The Gang, Little Annie, and Slowdive. As always this list is for listening to anytime really (well i would say that as it’s my list) but is probably best enjoyed loudly or with a good set of headphones on. So until next month, be safe, look after each other!
