How to Play the Flute

Several steps are to be followed in order to play the flute successfully, accompanied by diligent practice. The steps to be taken as mentioned below in sequential order,

  • Breath
  • Take a deep breath and breathe out a too-too sound with a smile on your face. The gestures of your lips must not change with the exhalation.

  • Adjust the Head Joint
  • In the beginning, take the head joint and push it slowly in the flute's main body. Remember, you can damage the flute if you try to do it forcefully. It would be best if you did not touch any of the keys and rods while pushing the head joint in the body of the flute.

  • Align the mouth hole in the Head Joint with the Help of First Key
  • You will have to mold the head joint to bring the spot in the right alignment with the key. You must hold the flute at the level of your eyes and make sure the mouth hole is perfectly positioned. If the alignment of the hole is not correct, you may not play music.

  • Adjust the Foot Joint
  • You need to adjust the foot joint to the end of the flute as you did for the head joint.

  • Control the Keys at Head Side with your Left-Hand Fingers
  • Use the gap of your thumb and index finger to hold the flute easily. You will have to position your index, middle and ring finger on the 2nd, 4th and 5th key, respectively. Put your thumb on the first key at the bottom.

  • Control the Keys at the End with your Right Hand
  • Use your thumb to give support to the flute. Put your index, middle and ring fingers on the three bottom keys of the flute. It would be best if you curled your hand to give it a C- shape. Keep your fingers on the key at resting mode, not with pressure.

  • Keep the Position of the Flute parallel to the Ground
  • Look forward and grip the flute with your fingers parallel to the ground to tune it easily. It will help if you do not keep the flute angling it downwards the floor.

  • Position the Flute hole under your Bottom Lip & tighten your Lip to Control the Power of the Wind
  • You must balance the flute between your bottom lip and chin for support. To get the best tune, you must put the hole at the centre of your lip. It will help if you strengthen the corners of your lips, but not so forcefully.

  • Blow air from the middle into the Hole
  • You need to blow air into the flute hole, and the air will create musical notes by travelling through the flute body. It would be best if you did not open your mouth frequently.

  • Use your Tongue to create Musical Notes.
  • You might flip your tongue back and forth to produce notes. The speed of your tongue will stimulate the notation. The notes of flutes are known as ‘staccato’. You may alternate between slow and fast notes by moving your tongue slower and faster sequentially.

  • Change your Breathing Speed to adjust the Pitch.
  • You must change your breathing speed and pattern to adjust and your note. You can play between high and low notes by using your breath. It would be best if you aim your flute upward to play high notes.

  • Use your Fingers properly on the Keys to play different notes
  • You must learn the notations from a book or take a print out of the computer chart. There is a fingering chart available. You can easily play the flute by using your fingers on the keys.

    Technique to Play a Flute

    Glissando is one of the powerful techniques to play the flute. Glissando can be best applied on an instrument covered with ring keys. There are two categories of Glissando. The continuous glissando techniques are used on an instrument like violin. You need to blow while slowing working on the keys in proper order and balancing the right angle. Flute players generally play discrete glissando technique that is also applied for piano. At times, continuous glissando is also required in playing the flute.

    Pitch Modulation

    Changing pitch is one of the major difficulties while playing the flute. The rise of your note will depend on your breath rate. The faster the breath will be, the higher the pitch. Similarly, with the slower breath, the pitch becomes low.
