At The Speed of Sound- Wings (1976)

Wings was a British-American rock group that rose to popularity during the 70s. Led by singer/songwriter Paul McCartney of the Beatles, the band consisted of Paul, his wife Linda, Denny Seiwell, and Denny Laine. However, the band has cycled through many different members. Band on the Run, another popular album by the band, is a prime example of this, showcasing the talents of many different musicians into one amazing experience.

At The Speed of Sound, which was released in March of 1976, had two popular singles: “Let Em In” and “Silly Love Songs”. Other tracks that I personally love from the album include “She’s My Baby”, “Beware My Love”, and the last track on the album, “Warm and Beautiful”. The unique style of the album gives it a 70s vibe with some experimental aspects; (the cuckoo clock sound in Silly Love Songs comes to mind.) They weren't afraid of taking risks, and I feel like, in a lot of ways, that's what made them so popular. Paul and the band members weren't afraid to branch out.

With that being said, the album also has a very nice, romantic vibe that gives it a good touch. To me, At The Speed of Sound shows the hard work that comes from true love and people committed to each other. I can hear and feel the love between Paul and Linda on this album, as well as the silly goofy moments they share during the process and I think that’s what makes it so special. I can absolutely feel paul and Linda's beautiful and loving energy when I listen to this album. When music is written out of love, WITH someone you love, I think it makes it more meaningful, memorable, and valuable. We can hear that as listeners in the music. Good music is the kind of music that isn't necessarily perfect and flawless, but what reflects the inner feelings and emotions of the people playing and singing. That's what I think Wings always had going for them and what made them different from other mainstream bands of the time period.

The album artwork is also something cool to look at, as on the back of the original vinyl includes a very cool photograph of each band member making really goofy faces in time lapse style. As a kid, I always laughed looking at that because who wouldn’t? It’s funny and really cool!

Another album that made this band popular that many recognize was “Band on the Run” (1973). It, too, has a very unique sound and vibe that captures the band’s flexibility and uniqueness in song writing and recording. It always fascinates me to see the side projects and work of individual Beatles, because each of them has such a unique and distinct sound. They all brought their own selves to music as well as together as a band, and that's what I think makes them one of the influential bands in history. Wings was a part of that, and people really loved the sound of Wings. I remember growing up and hearing my mom singing these songs in the kitchen, or riding in the car with my family and hearing "Band on the Run" playing in the background. Paul McCartney's side project Wings is definitely I think an underrated band. I feel that they deserve more recognition for the cool and unique things they brought to the music industry during such a pivotal time in music history!

Personally, I give At The Speed of Sound a solid 8/10. It’s one of my personal favorites.
