Billie Eilish: "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?"—A Review
Worth the Hype?
Billie Eilish. Probably one of the most perplexing artists of this time. There is a lot about Billie Eilish that is not always clear; her music, her style, her actions. They just don't really match up.
There's no doubting the talent that Eilish has. However, she has received backlash in the past for singing about things "she has never experienced," judging based on the fast that she is seventeen years old. Apparently Billie Eilish does in fact have a hand in writing her tracks despite these criticisms.
While listening to this new album, I must admit, I was pretty confused. Don't get me wrong, the album is well done and the sound and composure of the album is inventive for sure, but there were a few tracks that I just felt broke the (dare I say) "flow" of the work. Battling this claim, the launch of Billie's album made it a focus in the advertisements to stress that this was a window into Eilish's world and I suppose all the songs on the album come from her mind, of course, so the only way that the offsetting songs make sense in the make up of the album is with the advertisements about "the world of Billie Eilish." Without those ads, I would just justify my confusion and download select songs, honestly.
On the other hand, I was very impressed with the darkness and depth. I'd say a majority of the songs have a "funky" sound to them and I really appreciate that. It still gives you the softness of "Ocean Eyes," but now there's a new "bad guy" side of Billie Eilish that I appreciate.
The beat of "all the good girls go to hell" is probably one of my favorite parts of the album. The lyrics are so dark and creepy, and her voice is so quiet and low while the beat is very much like the Cheetah Girls, and it's so interesting. I absolutely love that.
"when the party's over" is a beautiful song as well, but has a completely different sound compared to the more upbeat songs.
Even though Billie's album makes me kind of confused, I think that is more than okay, mostly because she confuses me as an artist as well. Her style and her music don't match up at all. It's all very strange to me, but she somehow makes that work. It also clearly makes sense to her and I think that's all that really matters. Billie Eilish bluntly gives no fucks whatsoever. In my opinion, that's an admirable trait to have as a seventeen-year-old star who's in the limelight.
However, while there are a select amount of songs I like on her album, there are a few I don't like either. But despite that, I think this debut album is a killer one and I can't wait to see all the changes that Eilish goes through, and what music she works up next. There's so much that she can do, especially at her young age.
Compared to the multiple singles that Eilish released when she first rose to fame, she definitely has incorporated different musical influences and styles into her new stuff! It's a refreshing change for someone with her vocal ability.
Whatever you do, do not take my word for it! Make sure to go check out Billie Eilish on Spotify and Apple Music and make the judgments for yourself!
