A Deeper Look Into Post Malone's Sophomore Album

Freshman album Stoney was released in 2016 and Post Malone fans have been PATIENTLY waiting for the sophomore album to drop. On April 27 their dreams came true. The wait is over and Beerbongs & Bentley's has finally been released. Personally, I waited for the album to drop to listen to it as soon as I could. BB&B exceeded my expectations and embodies the life of Post Malone after making a name for himself in the music world. He wanted to emphasize on his life and what he was actually going through. Fame and fortune isn’t what it chalks up to be. After speaking to some fans of Post, they were a little disappointed, but I would have to disagree whole heartedly with them. I think this is some of Malone’s best work as an artist and owns up to what his style truly is.

1. Paranoid

Post started his album off with a song that stays true to what life is like making music. Never knowing who is going to take the spotlight next or come into your life to ride off your success. Post is a genuine human and wants people to be in his life that love him for him, not his money and the hype that is to come with this album. "Eyes open, I see you, I’m watching you. More people wanna be, you don’t trust no one" maps out Post’s frustration with everyone who is causing his anger and anxiety about who is actually in his life and who trying to be in his life just for the time being.

2. Spoil My Night (feat. Swae Lee)

In 2017 Swae Lee was nominated for song of the year in the Grammy Awards. Featured on the song, 'Spoil My Night' is an ode to the ladies who hit up the club to be with the famous guys or girls (whichever you prefer) and feelings start to come into play. Both artists express how they are just looking for a fun time and a fun night spending their money on other people and then feelings interrupt their plans.

3. Rich and Sad

The third song on the track is about how money did not create happiness for Post. Even though Post was gaining popularity and money, he still felt alone. The song expresses emotions about having to go through a hard time with his girlfriend and how she left him because money doesn’t buy happiness. Going through success without her in his life was extremely hard for Post and created a way of going through the motions in life for Post. His lyrics "I would throw it all away. I just keep on wishin’ that the money made you stay. You ain’t never cared about that bullsh*t anyway" stuck out to me only because you can tell he wanted to emphasize on the fact that his success and money didn’t mean anything to him without her. Nothing is as great as it seems unless you have that special person with you along the way.

4. Zack and Codeine

About the hit Disney show,The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Post raps about his life living in luxury hotels and throwing parties in the hotels. He references Cody and codeine (a drug known as an ingredient for lean) and how that plays a part in the parties in his life now, paying ode to himself and his successes.

5. Takin’ Shots

A straightforward song about drinking and taking shots and other activities he takes part in during his day to day activities. He references pop culture throughout the song such as Drake and Jason Williams. He tells us a story about what an average night of partying is like through his eyes.

6. Rockstar (feat. 21 Savage)

I was surprised to see this chart topper on the release. "Rockstar" helped Post get a start and really put his name on the charts. I believe it was put on just to keep the theme of a fame and fortune album, but I didn’t feel the need to review this song for the time that it as been released.

7. Over Now

Post Malone hit us with that classic rock feel with this song by including some strong electric guitar and drum kit sounds. This is a revenge song about a bad relationship with a girl who wanted him for his money. He was in love with her but saw her for her and came to his senses and wants nothing but bad karma to come her way. We see a new style from Post in this song and it is nothing but straight fire.

8. Psycho (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

This was the first true taste of what BB&B was going to be about. Post released the single along with a music video to start the hype for the sophomore album. "Psycho" is an ode to women who are along for the money and do anything to get into the in-crowd and how Post feels like his life has turned cold because of this.

9. Better Now

We all know the breakup song that put Post on top, "Fall Apart," and it is likely that this song is about the same person. Reminiscing on his past, Post uses a classic rock feel to express another breakup. One can get the feeling this is almost a dis track to be the better choice and seeing an ex with what some might call a downgrade.

10. Ball For Me (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Another song about some girl who wanted our dear Posty for his money. Malone collaborates with my girl Nicki Minaj to express more feelings about gold diggers by using references from a basketball lifestyle. Spoiling a girl and it never being enough, and ultimately becoming distracted and not worrying about the music. Nicki comes in with lines about being that girl who Post must be referencing and hyping herself up.

11. Otherside

We finally reach Post’s stage in the breakup where he misses her and starts to miss her and understand that no one will replace her. In his chorus, he nods tribute to the alcohol and models will never replace her place in his life. He’s lost himself in the hope that she’ll come back to him and save him from the "other side."

12. Stay

I was waiting to see if Post would do an acoustic song for this album, and boy was I ecstatic to hear it. He performed this song live on his Bud Light Dive Bar Tour in Nashville, TN. The song is about how hard it is to maintain a relationship with a girl. Going back and forth with each other to prove your worth and prove who you are as a partner, but not really knowing how long they will stay is the underlying theme here. Today, there is a social norm of not being about to trust our significant others even if they are loyal to one another. You can’t always count on people to stay in our lives.

13. Blame It On Me

Malone reflects the aftermath of what is the rap life. Post blames himself for having to choose the rap lifestyle and how fame affected his life in ways that aren’t always good. This song is upfront about what he has seen in light of his fame and fortune.

14. Same Bitches (feat. G-Eazy &YG)

A dual collab with G-Eazy & YG, the trio created a song that centers around women who do not have a sense or care about who they are, how these women tend to lean towards artists, but the "right girl" will be different than the rest. The song flows as a conversation between the artists and these women and how they asses them as the women come and go in their lives.

15. Jonestown (Interlude)

This interlude references the Jonestown cult massacre, where there were over 909 casualties in a mass murder. I assume this is Post talking about himself falling into the norm of the rap life and the partying that comes along with it. He fell into peer pressure in the party scene.

16. 92 Explorer

From what I have gathered, this is most fans favorite song off the album. More upbeat and faster flows with the lyrics. It’s a tribute to his 1992 Ford Explorer which he sent to West Coast Customs to be pimped out. It’s about how detailing his "car" is detailing his life and his spending habits and always needing to have the very best and the dopest clothes and materialistic things in life.

17. Candy Paint

I was also surprised that Post put this song on the album because it came out for the Fast and the Furious soundtrack last October. Seeing that it was on such a popular soundtrack, I can only assume it was attributed to his success.

18. Sugar Wraith

This is the third song about a car that Post owns on his album. Post has paid tribute to these vehicles in an attempt that defines his success. You can determine a man’s success by the cars he owns.

All in all, BB&B is 10/10 album. I appreciate Post and his openness about the fame and fortune as well as heartbreak and pain. He gives listeners something to relate to in the sense that fame is not what it is set out to be and that partying every night and being in a constant spotlight is not all what it is set out to be. I think that the sophomore album was a perfect pair with "Stoney."
