If you're into heavy metal, you've heard of Disturbed.

The band is from Chicago and consists of David Draiman (vocals), Dan Donegan (guitar), John Moyer (bass) and Mike Wengren (drums).

They're now well-known for their cover of Sound of Silence, although OG listeners will remember them from the Down with the Sickness days which further popularised the nu-metal genre. The Sickness is still their best-selling album to date.

Disturbed's style evolved over the years into hard rock, alternative metal and heavy metal, with their latest album Evolution embracing a more hard rock approach than their previous three heavy metal albums.

Pretty much everyone's listened to Stricken at this point, but let's give it up for the unsung Disturbed tracks!

1. Hell

This is one of my all-time favourite Disturbed songs. It was originally released on the Stricken single in 2005, and then as a single in its own right in 2011, but largely went unappreciated until it was re-released on The Lost Children. It's got that hard rock feel of some of the tracks on Ten Thousand Fists. Draiman's vocals are strong, the drumming is excellent. It's a great track, and really good for a gym/motivation playlist. I even listened to it on repeat before a job interview - I got the job too!

2. Pain Redefined

A track from Ten Thousand Fists, it's often overshadowed by the title track and Stricken. It's an angsty, yet powerful track. Draiman's vocals on this are awesome, with shouty verses and a melodic verse towards the end. It's generally a bit heavier than most of the songs on Ten Thousand Fists with incredible drumming and catchy riffs. Another one of my favourites.

I reviewed Ten Thousand Fists here.

3. The Brave and The Bold

For me, this is one of the best tracks on Immortalized (although The Vengeful One probably takes that prize). It's one of those b-sides which should have been on the album. It kicks off with an incredibly catchy riff and great drumming. Draiman's powerful vocals on this track stand out on the album. There's a brilliant solo on here from Donegan too. This track really helps to lift up an otherwise incredibly disappointing album for me.

4. Two Worlds

This track was re-released on The Lost Children, and was originally a b-side on Ten Thousand Fists. It's characterised by the album's awesome drumming, enjoyable riffs and the switch up in Draiman's impassioned vocals between aggressive and melodic. It's got a guitar solo from Donegan as well which is pretty rare for Disturbed this early on.

5. Torn

Torn is one of the best tracks on Indestructible, and is definitely overshadowed by the title track. It's an amazing album full of immense heavy metal tracks, and this is one of them. Torn has more melodic vocals from Draiman, which contrast nicely with Wengren's intense drumming and the guitar from Donegan. This track has a stunning solo.

6. Dehumanized

Originally a b-side from Believe, you can really tell it was a part of that album. This is a haunting track with Draiman's melodic vocals and painful lyrics. There's nifty little riffs and great drumming which frame the song perfectly.

7. Forgiven

Another track from Ten Thousand Fists, Forgiven starts off with Draiman's growls which set the song for one of the most aggressive songs on the album. There's a beautiful melodic verse before a stunning solo, and the drumming is great too. Such a solid track.

8. Serpentine

This is a dark track from Asylum, an album which is characterised by emotionally heavy tracks like Serpentine. There's growls, melody and a killer bassline, with lyrics that create incredible imagery and emotion. One of the best tracks from Asylum, and that's a great album.

I reviewed Asylum here. Spoiler: it's definitely worth listening to.

Bonus: Remnants

This is the instrumental that kicks off Asylum, and I couldn't leave it out! It starts the album off perfectly. The way it builds up slowly into Donegan's absolutely stunning guitar solo; it's wonderfully crafted. It originally formed part of the song Asylum, but they decided to separate it. Remnants contrasts amazingly with the dark theme of Asylum, but it's a beautiful track on its own as well.
