Recording music in your room is a very convenient way. Today's technology allows us to easily and affordably build a studio in our home.

And to build a good recording studio you need to have some essential gear. And in this article, you will find the most essential gear you need to have in your recording studio.

1. Audio Interface

The first gear you need to buy is an audio interface. Without it, you can't record high-quality sound.

Audio interfaces have a USB connection that allows you to connect them to your computer without any problem. Then you can plug in the guitar, bass, or microphone and record.

There are different kinds of audio interfaces. They differ by price and features. Some interfaces have multiple I/O but some of them are very simple.

For beginners, a simple, $100 audio interface will be enough. It will give you all the essentials.

But if you want more features and quality, then you should try an expensive one. Something like UA Volt 476.

2. Microphone

The second essential gear for recording is a microphone. Not only you can record vocals with it, but it can be used for guitars as well.

If you record electric, acoustic, or bass guitars microphone is very handy. You can mic up the guitar amp or record acoustic guitar with it.

But the main use will be for vocals. And for that, you need to buy a good quality microphone.

Fortunately today we have many options to choose from and most microphones are affordable. So, if you are on a budget, you can find a decent microphone.

And a recommendation is that you buy at least two different types of microphones. One dynamic and one condenser.

You will have more options and your mixes will sound more diverse.

3. Studio Monitors

When you build a recording studio in a small apartment you may don't buy a studio monitor but I highly recommend it.

Yes, in a small room headphones might be enough and many people like to use only headphones. But when it comes to mixing, you definitely need to have studio monitors.

They give more depth-in sound and your mixes will sound much better. But having both - studio monitors and headphones is great.

You will be able to listen to your mixes in different speakers and fix the issues immediately.

4. Headphones

Headphones are necessary for every recording studio. You may not get a studio monitor (though I highly recommend it) but you definitely need good headphones.

But not every headphone works in the recording environment. You need to get studio headphones.

This type of headphones are designed for recording and mixing and have great features and sound.

There are hundreds of great and affordable studio monitors that have great sound and a wide frequency range.

One headphone I can recommend is Audio-Technica M40x. It's affordable and has a very flat frequency response which is great for mixing.

5. Digital Audio Workstation

And the last but not least item you need to record songs is a digital audio workstation. It's not a gear. It's software you record everything in.

DAW allows you to record, mix, and master tracks in one place. Also, you can install and use any VST plugin within. Most DAWs come with native plugins too.

You may not know but you can get a DAW for free. There are many free DAWs such as Tracktion, Cubase LE, or Soundbridge. They have all the features you need to record and mix songs.

But the one I recommend is the Reaper. It costs only $60 and has all the capabilities you need. Also, it comes with tons of high-quality plugins.

Wrap Up

When you gather all the gear mentioned in this list, you are ready to start recording music in your home. You just need to have a decent computer and musical instruments. But there are lots of virtual instrument plugins you can use to record any instrument.
