100 Underrated Songs That Describe the Best Quarantine Feelings
I scoured Spotify for music that'll make you feel like you're trapped in an indie movie rather than in your bedroom
I’m sure many of us feel like our days are blurring together. In fact, I’ll be the first to raise my hand. But that's why I wanted to seek small joys out of my days during self-isolation. As a music junkie, I figured what better way to surround myself with good vibes than to create a new playlist filled with uplifting songs? So...I scoured Spotify for music that'll make me feel like I'm trapped in an indie movie rather than in my bedroom. The playlist is lowkey *chef's kiss*:
While compiling the songs, I had this lightbulb moment to celebrate my favorite quarantine memories with these tracks. So put on your headphones, turn up the volume and be ready for some eargasm. Here are 10 of my favorite underrated songs that describe the best feelings while self-isolating
1. In The Morning - ZHU
“In the Morning” is one of Zhu’s eccentric music that transports listeners from urban sprawl to his multi-dimensional imaginations. The peaceful tune encompasses the satisfying feeling of continuing a dream without being abruptly interrupted by an alarm clock.
2. Already Won - Kehlani
This empowering anthem is inspired by the R&B star’s journey from overcoming trauma to being nominated for a Grammy award. Imagine if you lose a competition but all your friends compliment you on your project. Receiving words of encouragement makes you feel like you had already won.
3. right here - keshi
This indie bop is by Keshi, a singer-songwriter from Houston who never fails to blend mellowness and lo-fi beats flawlessly. Similar to the melody, it’s nostalgic yet refreshing to catch up with old friends. It’s even more fulfilling when you can pick up from where you and your friends left off.
4. On Track - Tame Impala
Kevin Parker is no Jesus but his music sends you to heaven and back, which explains why his fans identify themselves as Disciples. “On Track” is one of the songs on his psychedelic odyssey, The Slow Rush, where he fuses 70’s sounds with electronics like no other. The tune encapsulates the sigh of relief when you click the ‘submit’ button to hand in an online assignment. Whether or not you completed the assignment by the due date, you still feel on track.
5. Trigger Protection Mantra - Jhene Aiko
If you’ve heard of Jhene Aiko, you probably recognize her for her alternative R&B and contemporary soul music. But in this track, she leverages her silky vocals combined with crystal singing bowls to take listeners on a spiritual journey. Imagine being washed over with utmost stillness while meditating or journaling to this tune. For 10 minutes, you can immerse yourself in your dream life where covid-19 is non-existent.
6. I Was Sad Last Night I'm OK Now - tobi lou
Who knew the guy who sang “I’m a buff baby, but I dance like man” has a song that can make you dance to your sadness? The song’s playful melody along with the cartoonish aesthetic transcends generations. During this stressful time, sometimes you just need a good crying session. When you release all the distress and fear you’ve suppressed for weeks, you feel a heavy weight lifted off your shoulders.
7. Can I Call You Tonight? - Dayglow
Dayglow is the altar ego of Sloan Struble, a self-made artist who finds solace in creating feel-good music with crisp guitar strumming. “Can I call you tonight?” has probably become the question you ask your friends every day. When your schedule miraculously aligns with theirs, especially of those who live on the opposite of the globe, you feel less isolated. Even though it’s through a screen, it makes you appreciate human connection more than ever.
8. Skin Care Tutorial 2020 - tobi lou
Oops, it's another Tobi Lou masterpiece. “Skin Care Tutorial 2020” is a light-hearted self-love anthem that will boost your confidence. The trippy visual content in the music video just makes it the song that much better. Imagine dressing up to look good for yourself while staying at home. The instant gratification you attain from seeing your reflection in the mirror without worn out sweatpants is one of the best feelings ever.
9. not ur friend - Jeremy Zucker
Best known for his song “all the kids are depressed”, his new album love is not dying also paints a cinematic picture with minimalistic soundscapes and precise instrumentation. The song describes one’s quest of walking away from toxic friendships. Think about the friends who you’ve been meaning to leave. Lucky for you, your problem is being taken care of by self-isolation plus you have more time to meet new people.
10. Mariposa - Peach Tree Rascals
If The Weeknd and Rex Orange County had a baby, it would be this band. The masterminds behind Peach Tree Rascals are just as cheerful as this wholesome track, which sounds like it’s straight out of a dreamy coming-of-age film. Inspired by the metamorphosis of butterflies, “Mariposa” is a song about transformation and the courage to expose one’s flaws. I’m sure we can all relate to this song since we have more time for introspection. So imagine jamming to it while watching the explosively colorful music video. You might as well get up and dance to it.
Hopefully, you found a few songs to add to your quarantine playlist. And if you look back at the list, you’ll realize most of the best things in life originate from undesirable circumstances. Whatever you're working through, I'm proud of you. May you seek small joys as the new month approaches (no pun intended).
