Short Film Reviews: From 2012 to 2017
The Carrier: We start this year-themed list with a film about grief, irresponsibility, and secrets taken to the grave. After serial philanderer Thatcher (Chad Michael Murray) is killed in an accident, his estranged mother Helen (Rita Wilson) visits his apartment and discovers some surprising things about her late son. While it may be a slow-boiling drama, The Carrier packs a lot of emotional power in its outwardly simple story. The viewer is taken on the same journey as Helen when it comes to finding out there was more to Thatcher than met the eye. The opening scene paints him as a thoughtless player with unspecified issues with his mother. But as the film progresses, we learn that there was a sensitive side to Thatcher not a lot of people got the chance to see. What's more, the twist ending recontextualizes Thatcher's womanizing ways and drops some heavy implications regarding his estrangement from Helen.
