The Adventures of Scallywag the Sea Dog, Part 4
IX We sailed through the night on the chippy sea south of the Coral Islands. It was a tense time, both because there were probably pirates following us, and the Coral Islands were known for many shallow, rocky areas. We could easily run aground.

Pastel de Chocolate Picante
I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. We moved to Toledo, Ohio when I was 11 because my father took a job with Owens Corning. It was sad saying goodbye to my friends, and I was nervous about moving to a country I had never even visited. That, and my English wasn’t the best.

The Old Barn's Photo Session
Lily was laying on her back, taking pictures of wildflowers from underneath. She was trying to capture the sunlight through the petals. She was also patiently and peacefully watching the clouds as they went by, waiting for the perfect, puffy backdrop. Her back began to ache, and the sunlight was no longer revealing the intimate details. So she packed up her equipment and headed out.

The Adventures of Scallywag the Sea Dog, Part 3
VII I stood at the bow of The Dolphin, my front paws on the gunwale, and my nose poked out underneath the railing. After a year as a Sea Dog, I had concluded that this was a perfect day. Mostly blue skies. Puffy clouds. And wind. Lots of wind, that curled waves into foamy whitecaps. The bow of The Dolphin would lunge up over the crest of a wave, then slam down into the trough, sending a wash of seawater over the railing. The spray drenched me, filling my nose with the sweet smell of brine, burning my eyes for a brief moment, and crusting my coat with salt. A landlubber might find this nauseating, but a Sea Dog loves a day like this. It made me feel strong. It gave me purpose. It made me feel alive.

The Adventures of Scallywag the Sea Dog, Part 2
V We were three days out of Harbortown, headed west-northwest toward the tiny Chunga Islands on the edge of the Blue and North Seas. We sailed under a mariner flag, which had a sea-green background with Neptune’s golden trident pointed downward. A trident is like a barbed, three-pronged pitchfork. It was a custom of the seas to fly a banner signifying who you were – mariners, merchants, fishermen, whalers, gypsies, and even pirates observed the custom.

The Adventures of Scallywag the Sea Dog, Part 1
Hello! My name is Scallywag, and I am a dog. You might ask what breed I am, but the best I can say is that I am a mutt born of a mutt born of a mutt, going back more generations than I can trace. But I can say I would not be welcome at any high-falootin’ dog show. And though I lack pedigree, I wouldn’t trade any of my wonderful life and great adventures to have been a pampered and preened poodle from Pembroke.

Mexican Street Food
I’m an Ohio boy, and three years ago, I moved to Arizona to capture the western wind in my heart. I love the adventure of exploring the western spaces. After living in Miami, Florida for six years, I decided that big city life was not for me. I missed small town living. After a fair bit of moving around, I opted for Cottonwood, Arizona.

My Best Friend
I attended the University of Toledo (go Rockets!) in Ohio. Though I graduated Cum Laude, my proudest academic achievement was that I had the worst attendance rate of any student on campus. If I didn’t have a reason to miss class, I would invent one. Not that I’m suggesting that as a course of action for everyone, but I was a decent student who found most classes snooze worthy. Sadly, my absences rarely involved girls on campus. I was a senior, wrapping up my history degree. This is the story of a day I had a good reason to miss class.

My Audacious Crabwalk
This is the true story of a group of Ohio college friends who wanted to be cool like the fraternity students. We were friends who met in high school and college. We all came from working class families, so weren’t upper crust, but we had good hearts and we knew how to have fun. Although we were a ragtag bunch of five misfits, we ended up having one of the best intermural co-ed softball teams at the college. While others showed up with sponsored uniforms, we showed up in mismatched T-shirts and shorts. We beat most of the elite teams. We were hoping to get lucky with the girls on the team, but we were so dorky that we didn’t get to first base.
