Bahama Mama
I met him on the last day of my holiday to Nassau that year. He was lying on a sun lounger – sorry, the sun lounger; the one by the pool, but furthest from the nuisance of the DJ-booth, with good access to the bar and the beach. The perfect spot, in other words, which is why I’d wake up early every morning to get it. An unbroken ritual of some four years of holidaying on the same island at the same resort with the same parents.

“You’re mad, I can tell.” I shake my head but I can’t shake off the petulance – lips pursed, jaw slung lazily into my palm. Because truth is I am mad. It’s our anniversary and he’s miles away, again. I can tell he hates this as much me, even through the video call I spot the guilt etched between his eyebrows. Doesn’t make it any less shitty.

Tick Tock
I’m slammed out of sleep, jarred by a furious roar rumbling from my right. I scrub at the sharp pain at the back of my neck from jolting awake and blink my bleary vision into focus. The roaring to my right is just an oncoming train, tamer now that my senses have settled, and shrouded by the condensation fogging up the windows. I swipe at it just as the train slips past and the blurred landscape beyond springs up in its place, tinged blue by the hue of dawn. Or dusk, I’ve kinda lost my bearings. It takes me a couple beats to realise I’m moving, and a couple more for the fact that I’m on a train myself to materialise around me.
