The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Kevin was startled awake by the shimmering glow of the candle as he opened his eyes, his vision hazy, adjusting to the light. He'd never been drunk before, but he imagined this was what it would feel like. He had the vague feeling of being misplaced, waking up without knowing where he was.

When I was younger, many years ago, the highlight of the Summer used to be the annual family camp out. We would get together on some land that was your great Grandpa, and Grandma’s. In reality its land that had been in the family name since maybe even around Indian times.
There weren't always dragons in the valley. Though much had changed since the valley lost its green, and since Tobius had come of age. He was the third son of Hyrel, although considered illegitimate he was the last living. The first of whom lost shortly after birth. The other was lost to the lustful hunger of a dragon.

I felt a dainty hand squeeze mine gently. “Daddy how much longer?” I looked down at Marisol, her tired brown eyes pleading that the line end. I felt my face tightening, Can't let her see. I stood on my toes to get my head above the older women in front of us. The line of people seemed endless. I sighed in defeat, but only to myself. I had no power to move a hundred people. My heart dropped. I tried to lift it back up before looking at my daughter to answer.

In a sea of corn Harlan Walker methodically spread fertilizer over a barren spot in the hopes that his field would grow to cover it. Above him crows cawed annoyingly, vying for airspace with a larger buzzard gliding nearby. "Aint nuthin’ to see here." He said with his neck tilted to the sky.
