Another Life
“He's the one, him.” Deon felt his shoulder shaking, “Hey you. Sir, sir, wake up.” Deon, winced, his eyelids felt like they weighed a hundred pounds each. He found his words difficult to form, as he slurred awake. “Wha, who is it?” He felt the slight pull of gravity at his limbs, he imagined for a moment he was floating in space. His dark eyes shot open, to the unfamiliar hands on his shoulder.

Kevin was startled awake by the shimmering glow of the candle as he opened his eyes, his vision hazy, adjusting to the light. He'd never been drunk before, but he imagined this was what it would feel like. He had the vague feeling of being misplaced, waking up without knowing where he was.

When I was younger, many years ago, the highlight of the Summer used to be the annual family camp out. We would get together on some land that was your great Grandpa, and Grandma’s. In reality its land that had been in the family name since maybe even around Indian times.

I stood on my toes to get my head above the older women in front of us. The line of people seemed endless. I sighed in defeat, but only to myself. I had no power to move a hundred people. In a sea of corn Harlan Walker methodically spread fertilizer over a barren spot in the hopes that his field would grow to cover it. Above him crows cawed annoyingly, vying for airspace with a larger buzzard gliding nearby. "Aint nuthin’ to see here." He said with his neck tilted to the sky.
