Returning to Eden
Since Mary had announced her pregnancy, grandma took up knitting the old-fashioned way (she spent most of the time dropping stitches and cursing). She also did crosswords with Alfie and read from the collection of actual books left in the apartment, rather than a virtual scroll or a screen. She deduced that civilizations from the past had something rather rich that was missing from the AI world. Among the books were pregnancy books that Martha had lent to Mary, who was doing her best to avoid looking at them. She was afraid that learning about natural pregnancy and birth might terrify her more than she already was. Grandma had tried to encourage her, but her advice had fallen on deaf ears.

Returning to Eden
At Police HQ Jude paced up and down outside the door to Damian Diabolik’s office, feeling like a bundle of nerves. He caught several snippets of animated discussion as his boss and Yannis Rathmore aired their differences - over him. Rathmore was attempting to sell the idea of him going undercover and it was a hard sell. Jude thought that if the DCI’s face got any more purple he might explode. He wondered why on earth he found him so objectionable.

Returning to Eden
At Police HQ DCI Damian Diabolik sat behind his desk, surrounded by glass walls that allowed him to watch all his staff, something he did with diligence every day. He ran a very tight ship. If someone spent too long visiting the toilet, he docked their credit. Today, however, he was troubled. Another elderly person had been reported missing and her whole family along with her. She had been due to be euthanised as per state requirements because of the development of treatment-resistant arthritis but she was a no show. Ordinarily it wouldn’t have concerned him. Some elderly people got frightened, tried to flee and were later found by his department, cowering in somebody’s attic. This time, however, he was rattled. There had been at least a dozen disappearances in the last six months alone. Every police department in the country was reporting missing elderly people, or people who had developed disabilities. Inexplicably, young couples also seemed to be vanishing and this puzzled him exceedingly.

Returning to Eden
Grandma and Mary exchanged glances and then nervously looked at George, who was clearing cups and saucers away. He had stopped momentarily and was giving them all an odd look. He made a noise that sounded like he was clearing his throat, if he had actually had one, that is. He spoke in a disapproving tone.

Returning to Eden
The Year 2176 “I wanted you to be the first to know”, Rowan tentatively confided, “Sarah and I are expecting a baby.” Mary, the secretary, shrieked with delight and almost knocked the mug of coffee off her desk as she bear hugged him enthusiastically. They had worked in the same advertising firm for five years. He did art work for commercials.
