Pervez Musharraf, Former Pakistani General & President, Dies in Dubai at 79
Introduction
Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died from an illness in Dubai, according to Pakistan's main opposition party. In a statement issued Friday, the PML-N party said Musharraf had died on Thursday at 79. The retired general led the country into a democratic government after he seized power in a 1999 coup and later lost elections that saw his opponents win most of the votes. He was a key ally of the United States during its war against terrorism following the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, which claimed thousands of lives. Over the years, he held office twice as prime minister before becoming president in 2008, serving until 2007 when he resigned under pressure from several opposition parties after ousting then-Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani over corruption allegations
