Derek wanted to go after Kelly but his feet wouldn’t carry him. He wanted to thank her but his voice wouldn’t let him. The baby, who had slept through the entire ordeal, began to stir in Janet’s arms and drew his attention away from the door.
Octavian and the captain had stayed up late that night discussing a mixture of military strategy and wedding plans. They had decided that Octavian and Elizabeth would be married upon their return from this campaign.
Octavian remembered that morning with Elizabeth well. The captain had made introductions and excused himself; leaving the two alone. He had been a nervous wreck trying to figure out how to politely interact with her when interaction with her was forbidden. Add to that the worry of a mysterious illness and the betrayal of his vocal cords, and you’re left with an absolute mess of a man.
Octavian laughed as he remembered that morning. He had gotten up and ready for the meeting with the captain. He was focused on the content of their meeting and double-checking his uniform to be sure he hadn’t forgotten anything important.
Octavian hated long, quiet rides like the one he was currently enduring. This particular trek was made worse by the fact that it was on a ship.
They both jumped up from the table. Janet ran into the nursery and Derek grabbed his gun and ran to the front door. He was able to see through the peephole that someone had broken Janet’s car window.
Derek stopped when he saw Janet standing in the doorway. Her hand was over her heart and silent tears that matched his own were streaming down her face.
Going back to the nursery with a baby created a confusing emotional reaction in Derek. He struggled with memories of the past; all the excitement and love he had felt in this room while he was transforming it.
