Tracker for Hurricane Beryl

Where is it headed? How will Texas be affected?

By Billy WilliamsPublished 3 days ago 2 min read

As a powerful hurricane that is sweeping over the Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl is shattering records. What is it that Texans ought to be aware of?

Dallas — History is already being made by Hurricane Beryl.

These are the current records:

The earliest-ever Category 5 hurricane to occur in a calendar year

June's strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin

July's strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin

June's first significant hurricane to hit the Antilles

In 42 hours, a tropical storm can become a major hurricane (this has only happened six other times)

From here, where does the storm go? And when it gets closer to the Gulf of Mexico, what effects will it have on Texas? Here is the most recent radar and forecast:

Hurricane Beryl's current tracking and radar

Present circumstances

Beryl was still a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph as of Tuesday night at 10 p.m. It is currently heading toward Jamaica from south of Haiti/Dominican Republic.

There are currently hurricane watches in force for Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Where did Beryl come to rest?

On Monday morning, it made landfall as a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph on Carriacou Island, Grenada.

The current projected trajectory for Hurricane Beryl

According to the most recent projection, Beryl will spend this week cruising across the warm seas of the Caribbean. There are currently wind, rain, and storm surge hurricane warnings in effect in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

It may make another landfall on Jamaica when it passes quite near to the island.

As it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula, Beryl will likely continue to be a hurricane even though it will weaken. It arrives at the Peninsula somewhere between Thursday and Friday morning. This will affect locations on Thursday and Friday, such as Tulum, Cozumel, and Cancun. Then, according to the current forecast track, it will spend the weekend heading into the Southwest Gulf as a Tropical Storm.

Will Texas be affected by Hurricane Beryl?

Beryl will currently enter the Gulf of Mexico this next weekend. It's still unclear where it will go from there. There is a possibility of a landfall from the Mexican coast to South Texas.

However, it appears rather likely that the hurricane won't be quite as powerful as it has been in the Caribbean at that time. It might still be a powerful hurricane or tropical storm, though.

Beryl's final trajectory will be influenced by a trough of low pressure that will bring rain chances and cooler temperatures to Texas this weekend, as well as a ridge of high pressure that is bringing Texas heat and rain-free days. Until the storm moves into the Gulf this weekend, we probably won't have a clear picture of where it will land in Texas or Mexico.

Every line denotes a distinct model. Regarding the impact on the Yucatan Peninsula, most people agree, however opinions diverge when it comes to the Gulf.
