System 1 responds rapidly. Most of the time, it is on automatic pilot. It is influenced by habits. When it hears a loud noise, it instinctively runs. When insulted, it feels compelled to respond. It definitely eats a great brownie. It has the ability to postpone and act on impulse. It is Simple to modify. It wants what it wants at the right time. It might be extremely scared or complacent. It's a doer, not a planner.

System 2 is more contemplative and deliberate. It calculates. It detects loud noises and determines if they are a reason for alarm. It considers probability carefully, but slowly. It does not take offense. If it perceives motives for

Offense, it conducts a thorough evaluation of what, all things considered, should be done. When it sees a tasty brownie, it considers whether it should eat it. It is hard to manipulate. It emphasizes the necessity of self-control. It focuses on planning rather than execution.

To understand manipulative behavior, it's important to make challenged statements about the nature of the two systems. Many activities are considered manipulative when they appeal to System 1 and subvert, fool, undermine, or fail to adequately satisfy System 2.
