Book 1 Summary:
Loving couple story, they have a child named Ella. Ella disappears in the middle of the night and SOMETHING happens, she returns and nobody notices. Almost two years later they have another child, named May. When May is only 4 months? old, Ella takes her in the middle of the night and throws her in the river. Sad. The good fairies (yeah there are fairies, mystical and magical creatures) see what happens and take pity on the family. They transform a baby fairy (who has no powers, except for beauty and grace) into a baby human and put her where baby May had been. They go to sleeping Ella and implant a reflex to protect May inside of her good little heart. As the girls grow up, May is favoured as she is so beautiful and kind. Ella sneaks away sometimes and trains herself to use her newly discovered powers. Ella blends in with everyone, she looks normal and acts it too. She doesn’t tell anyone about her powers. They get stronger. When the girls are older (May 16 Ella 18) Ella goes mad trying to keep her powers at bay (the pixies? who kidnapped her at birth cursed her with the powers and have been adding to it every year) Ella runs off and May follows her into the woods. Ella leaves signs that she’s there (on purpose?) and May follows them until there are no more. The pixies? kidnap Ella and ramp up the power so much that she changes form. Ella turns into a huge phoenix. Phoenixes are extremely rare, powerful and deadly. Ella’s powers are fully unleashed and everyone she comes across feels the wrath of her flaming hatred. Of being pushed away, of May. May hears about this phoenix and is intrigued, so she follows sightings until she comes face to face with Ella. She recognizes her sister right away, and tries to calm her down. Ella doesn't listen and chases her to the edge of a cliff. She brings up her claw and prepares a flame, she was going to destroy the person she hated so much, the one who had made her so miserable. A huge phoenix claw and explosion of fire shoot out at May. Just as they are about to hit, a golden translucent bubble surrounds her and protects her. The phoenix falls. Ella controlled herself. Almost. She’s still a phoenix.
Book 2 Summary:
May and Ella return home. Ella is still a phoenix. Everyone runs from them, afraid of the huge phoenix. May tries to reassure them, but no one trusts even her. Ella gets more angry and ashamed as they travel. She feels bad for the destruction, she believed that she had caused it and was completely responsible. When they arrive home it takes May ages to convince their parents that the huge destructive phoenix is Ella. They stay at home for a while, but constantly search for ways to return Ella to her normal state. May finds an ad for a wizard in an old newspaper. They set off, but Ella gives May a book right as they leave. It’s a journal from when she was younger. All about training her powers, May and how rejected she felt. She had used her powers to remove the part about dreaming she threw May in the river, she was still sure she had. They set off to find the wizard along a hazardous path.

door to find a round glass hallway that went around the bottom of a huge lab room where Ella was chained in a simple outdoors-themed habitat. She had forgotten her helmet, and people started asking her questions, Ella saw her and started fighting the chains even more, distracting the pixy workers. May’s friend was hiding in a little corner. He was waiting for her. The two locked all the workers in the habitat with Ella and they started looking around at all the buttons and switches. Everything was written in pixy, which ____ luckily knew how to read. He used one of his simple wizard spells to teleport the wizard and his equipment here so he could cast the spell. He would have teleported them to him instead, but phoenixes can’t be teleported by wizard magic, and Ella was inside the habitat, and they were in the little glass hallway. The wizard cast a spell to make them switch places with the workers, so they were in the habitat with Ella and the workers were in the glass hallway. Elkabar came into the glass hallway and with Ella’s journal in his hand and saw the wizard about to cast the spell. He broke into the habitat room magically and destroyed the spell. He told them that spell would kill her. It would destroy all the magic and while Ella was in this form, that would destroy her completely. He then said he knew how to return her to her normal form, but everyone would have to leave except for May. He told May she was the only one who could break the spell. It wasn’t a matter of magic, it was different. Ella was grieving over having killed May. The real May. She felt she deserved rejection and being trapped as a phoenix. He told May he was going to give her temporary powers, but she would only have them for two minutes. She would have to cast a very intricate spell. He didn’t tell her what it would do, only that it would result in Ella returning to her regular form. May was given the powers and she cast the spell. It took a while, May felt different when it was over. Ella had returned. She and May hugged for a long time. When they broke away from the hug, Ella noticed Elkabar. She started shooting spells at him frantically, pulling May behind her. May stopped her and told her (with some assistance from Elkabar) the truth of everything that had happened. Ella forgave Elkabar after his many frantic apologies were put to an end. Elkabar had a grand coach prepared for them to take back to their parents and home. Elkabar, Ella, May and _____? Talked on their long journey back. When they did get home, Ella and May explained everything to their parents (well their mom and May’s kinda dad?) everything that needed explaining, ____ listened and was still slightly confused. After that Ella still had her powers and she used them regularly, she visited Elkabar a lot and May joined in sometimes. The wizard was paid for his troubles by Elkabar, and as for _____, he and May became greater friends than they were when they were kids.

Pankhurst is a name well known to the history of women’s suffrage. Who hasn't heard the name Emmaline Pankhurst, founder of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an all-women organisation campaigning for the right to vote? The group that helped to achieve the right to vote for women in Great Britain and Ireland in 1918. Some know of her daughter Christabel, both being honoured by the Pankhurst memorial in Victoria Palace Gardens, London, right next to the UK Parliament buildings. Sylvia Pankhurst is notably not included in the monument. Why? Because she split with the WSPU to campaign against Britain's entry into First World War.
