The art of writing consists in joining the topics together to make an image. This means, how to create a sense of the following: What did she say? Where did she come from? What is going on?”

It may sound obvious, but so much of literature revolves around the idea of the individual telling their story to someone who is not there, and so that something that was mundane and inane becomes somehow beautiful or emotional. The common thread of creative writing, in particular, is how the individual telling their story in words or imagery can inspire us, and how the surprising element of change in our narrator is part of what makes something poignant.

How does this relate to fiction? When someone reads something, they don’t necessarily want to be entertained. They want to be shocked, challenged, transformed by the words that the writer has placed before them. We may want to look away, not wanting to see what we know is coming, but we can’t help ourselves.

Not all people are poets and creative writers, so what should we do if we don’t fit into either category? What about the writer who likes to write how-to stories? What about writers who love to write in the abstract, like beautiful poetry or novellas?

This is where we can find our own niche in writing, where we can find the element that is the most valuable to us, that will give us the greatest comfort and joy. At the same time, we are always talking about the same basic truths about life, the ones that transcend language and humanity. As humans, we have stories to tell about what is important in our lives. We have all gone through great tragedy and great tragedy at a young age.

We should all be writing about this.

A few days ago, I was thinking about the tragedy of going through the loss of a child. I was thinking about the strength, the courage, and the wisdom of a parent. I want to write about this. I want to write about the brutality of a father losing his son and how this shakes him and pushes him to do things that he never thought he could do. I want to write about his life and how it has been altered forever.

If I write this, I feel that my words will bring comfort to other parents who are going through a loss or who are not yet in this struggle. I feel that my words will make the feelings I feel about loss real to other people, bringing them to tears. I think of the difficulties that a writer has to face in finding his or her voice. At this point, my background is in poetry, and I have not yet discovered the rules for fiction.

Does a reader want to see beauty or emotional depth?

Why can’t we read things in a new way?
