Where the Crawdads Sing

Bestselling Novel Where the Crawdads Sing is turned into a Movie and It's All About Eve: A blog about the book Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and why it became so popular.

Kya, the protagonist of Where the Crawdads Sing, is an unusual woman. She lives alone in the marsh and has no contact with civilization .

From a young age, Kya is alone. Her mother leaves her with her father, who loses interest in parenting, and she takes on the responsibilities of caring for herself and the house.

Kya learns to fish. Her father teaches her how to skin a rabbit, but he is teaching her about life and love in ways she could not understand at the time. He tells her about his life and how he came to live in the marsh, about his work as a boat builder, about the birds and fish of their environment.

One day she finds a letter that was sent to her father by her mother and leaves it on the table for him to read. He burns this letter as well as most of his wife's wardrobe and canvases that are hanging in the house. He takes long trips away from home to gamble, leaving Kya alone. Eventually, he does not return at all, making him the last member of his family left at home with Kya. Self-reliant by nature and taught by necessity, she learns how to garden and also becomes friends with a black man named Jumpin' whom she trades fresh mussels and smoked fish for money at his gas station at the boat dock.

Kya learning to fish

She lives for many years in the marsh where she grew up, unaware of society and its rules. Kya does not know about many things that are normal for people living in society.

She was raised by local boys who were friends with her father before he abandoned them all. She becomes involved with Tate Walker. The two form a romantic relationship until Tate leaves for college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He promises to return.

At the age of 19 Kya has a brief romance with Chase Andrews, a playboy who seduces her with his charm and promises of marriage, she discovers that he has already proposed to another woman. Despite her suspicions, she believes her boyfriend's lies, until she catches him in an affair with his secretary and decides to end their relationship.

Tate, having graduated from college visit Kya. Although she still loves Tate, Kya rejects his offer for a relationship and admits she cannot forgive him for leaving her. She agrees that they can be friends.

Kya's relationship with Chase is unsettled when he hits her for refusing his advances. She fends off his attack, but does not report it. The next week, Kya witnesses Chase coming to the shack where she lives and hides from him until he leaves. More of her father's abuse starts to haunt her, causing her to fear retaliation from Chase

Kya

Chase is found dead beneath the fire tower on the morning of October 30, 1969. The sheriff, Ed Jackson, believes it to be a murder on the basis of there being no tracks or fingerprints, including Chase's, around the tower. Ed speaks with sources and receives conflicting statements: he learns Kya was seen leaving Barkley Cove before the murder and then returning the day after. There also were red wool fibers on Chase's jacket that belonged to a hat of Kya's; this leads Ed to believe she is responsible for his death.

The case against her comes down to a feather found in his pocket that connects him to her former bird-watching friend.

A feather is found in Tate's pocket. The prosecutor says that it connects Kya to the murder.

The story is told from Kya’s point of view, but we do get to see things from the perspectives of some other characters.

If you're looking for a good book to read, this one is a great option. It's hard to put down and has an interesting story that keeps you wanting more. It also features themes of friendship, loyalty and love. If none of those things appeal to you then just go ahead and read it because there are no other reasons why anyone should ever read anything ever again.
