Moto E7 Plus Review

Motorola last year announced the Moto E6S (Review), and now the company has introduced another E-series device in the lineup called the Moto E7 Plus. It is an affordable offering like its siblings, but with a major design shift and spec bump.

Priced at Rs. 9,499 for the single 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage variant, Moto E7 Plus arrives in Misty Blue and Twilight Orange colour options. With the goodness of Stock Android, 10W charger and 48-megapixel primary rear camera, it seems good on paper, but does it have the spark to battle out with Xiaomi, Realme and Samsung branded phones under Rs. 10,000? We got our hands on the handset a few weeks ago and here's what we think about it.

Moto E7 Plus Review: Design and display

The moment you will lay your eyes on the device, you will be instantly reminded of Moto G9, which was launched at Rs. 11,499 in the country. It brings a square-shaped camera array at the back housing two senors, and a fingerprint reader placed right below it. It comes with a water-repellent design and a beautiful gradient finish plastic rear panel, which immediately appealed us.

The phone looks and feels great, however, after using it for few weeks, we realised its build is slightly delicate and prone to scratches and dents so much so that our review unit retained some in a few days. But, if you use a protective case (that you have to buy separately), you might prevent the phone from losing its shine.

It comes with a dedicated Google Assistant button, which isn't much of use though, and a single SIM tray slot with space for microSD card.

On the front, it has a 6.5-inch HD+ MaxVision display, 20:9 aspect ratio and a water-drop notch cutout. And, we must say, its display is brighter and sharper than other handsets that we have reviewed in this segment. It throws decently vibrant colours indoors, but it could have been better under direct sunlight.

Moto E7 Plus Review: Performance

Under the hood, it has Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor - the one seen on mid-ranger Oppo A53. It can run day to day tasks quite smoothly without any hiccups, and the icing on the cake is the Stock Android experience. We didn't face any problems while switching between apps or using multiple social media apps together, but when we tried playing a few games like Call of Duty Mobile, the performance wasn't outstanding. The phone gets warm too after a 30-minute game session.

It operates on Android 10 Operating system and packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is further expandable up to 512GB memory via dedicated microSD card.

We loved the clean Stock Android experience. There is absolutely no bloatware, ads or unnecessary loaded applications, giving it an edge over other budget devices in this range. Moreover, you get a promise of 2 years of security updates.

The fingerprint reader is comfortable to reach out and quick to unlock the phone. Besides all of this, Moto Actions deserve much appreciation here. It is quite handy to turn the torch on or off by simply shaking the phone twice or taking a screenshot by swiping down three fingers on the screen.

Moto E7 Plus Review: Battery

Coming to the battery, the Moto E7 Plus comes equipped with 5000mAh unit with 10W charging support. Its battery is admirable and long-lasting. We didn't feel the need to charge it even at the end of the day with extensive usage. It can last over 21 hours with usual texting, calling and browsing, and would require to be fueled up only the next morning. But, charging the device takes around 3 hours from zero to 100 per cent, which is sub-par considering that the competition is offering some sort of fast charging tech in this segment.

Moto E7 Plus Review: Cameras

In the world of triple and quad cameras, the E7 Plus gets dual rear cameras accommodating a 48-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.7 aperture and a 2-megapixel depth lens with f/2.4 aperture. There is also an 8-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.

The pictures taken from the camera didn't fascinate us much and turned out to be just satisfactory, especially the front camera. The selfies lacked colour vibrancy and clarity. There is a lot of visible noise and distortion in the overall picture.

However, when it comes to back cameras, the performance was better, and images came out lively and accurate. You get a dedicated Night Mode, Portrait, Panorama, Slow Motion, Time-lapse, Live Focus and a unique Cutout feature that can cut your picture out of the background and swap it with something you like.

The shots taken in dim lighting conditions or night were quite impressive too. Although the phone takes a while to register and process the night pictures, it provides excellent results and does an excellent job.

Moto E7 Plus Review: Verdict

So, is Moto E7 Plus worth buying under Rs. 10,000?

Yes, it is in every aspect.

Its display is rich, performance - smooth, software - the cherry on top and lastly, battery - powerful. There's a slight compromise in front camera, but overall, it is a complete package for most types of users. And, if you are looking to buy a phone in this budget, we don't find any reason for you to not go for E7 Plus in India right now.

There might be much fancier options like Realme 6i and Redmi 9 Prime, but Moto E7 Plus has carved its niche in the category.
