How to solve the problem of a single mouse click that turns into a double click

I don't like to use touchpads, I stuck with the good old mice (but wireless, wireless).

Despite the number of years that I have used a mouse, I have never had this kind of problem until now: a single mouse click that the computer considers being a double click! (randomly).

Example: I open Firefox, and above, Thunderbird, the 2 windows being the same size and maximized. I click (once) on the small cross to close Thunderbird, and presto, Firefox closes at the same time! The mouse, therefore, made a double-click instead of a single click!

Once, OK, maybe I clicked too fast… 2nd time, the mail is enough! Once again?!… 3rd time, there is a problem and it is to be watched closely!

Of course, over time, we quickly notice that there is a problem somewhere with the click of the mouse and the double clicks!

So, how do you solve this click - double click problem?

First of all, you should know that there are several possible sources of problems:

  1. Mouse driver problem
  2. Problem with Windows settings
  3. A physical problem with the mouse (wear, dirt, oxidation, etc.)

1. Mouse driver problem

Point 1 is very easy to notice: if you have a new mouse and as soon as it is installed, the single click makes double-clicks, there was a problem during the installation. (I still think this is a rare case, but not impossible) In this case, you just have to uninstall the driver and then reinstall it. If this ever continues, it is either a problem with the driver itself and that the manufacturer/developer of the mouse has done its job poorly, or a poor adjustment of the mouse under Windows (point 2), or a physical problem of the mouse (point 3) (but it doesn't give a damn if it's a new mouse!)

2. Problem at the adjustment level in Windows

Under Windows, it is possible to say more or less what speed between 2 clicks means a "real" double-click or 2 successive clicks. The difference? The first allows you to open a file for example, and the second does not.

To make this adjustment, it is necessary to go to Control Panel, Hardware, and Sound, Mouse. In the Button tab, you will have a " double-click speed " box. It's up to you to set the best speed. (Personally, it doesn't matter how fast or slow the speed is, and without changing the way I double click, I still manage to open the folder ...

If this never changes anything for you and your clicks are still considered 2 super-fast clicks, unfortunately, there is a good chance that it is a physical problem (see next point).

3. Physical problem with the mouse

Unfortunately, this is a problem that affects a lot of mice of all brands. I had been lucky so far with many mice, but luck had to let me down one day! ^^

The double-click problem is a contact problem that may be due to wear, dirt, or oxidation.

If so, you have several solutions:

Your mouse is still under warranty: so you can ask them to repair it.

Your mouse is no longer under warranty (or it is still, but as you bought it on the internet, the shipping costs will cost you too much): You can dismantle it (be careful that if you are still under warranty, you will lose it ) and change the part that is found in practically all mice: it is the OMRON D2FC-F-7N switch (there are several models, but if I am not talking nonsense, this is the one that is the no longer used, whether wired or not, large or small unknown brand).

Unfortunately, this method has several drawbacks: loss of warranty (if it was still valid), removal of the pads, disassembly, purchase of the part and probably replacement pads, removal of the top of the cover without flipping everything, removal of the switch without everything slipping, etc ...

Your mouse (no longer) is under warranty, but you don't want to worry about returning the mouse / disassembling or you don't want to buy a new one: there is a trick: the software solution! It's that simple!

How does it work? It's relatively simple, he can detect and tell the difference between a wrong double-click and a real double-click! I don't have much info, but it has to look at the time level, we humans without superpowers can't click twice in a few milliseconds. From my few tests, I don't get below 56 milliseconds, so I think the software must have put a limit in those waters. Below, these are just simple clicks; beyond that, he does not care. And therefore, all false double-clicks are taken as simple clicks! And it works!

Moreover, this software is extremely simple (a little too much): you download it, and you launch it, period! And it will already be active!

As you can see, you just have a Start button (when you launch it, no need to press Start, it's already running) and a Stop button. With a counter to see that it is working well. On the other hand, I think that the fixed double-click rate is a little too big compared to reality, but hey, who cares a little, the main one being that it works and I must say that it is perfectly the case with me!

Negative point is that it does not include a function to launch it at startup ... (by the way, I forgot to specify that its use does not require installation and that it is free!)

Fortunately, you can do it yourself. It's not very complicated, but it requires several operations (for versions lower than Windows 10):

  1. After downloading the file, place it in a location where you will find it.
  2. Right-click on the file and click on " Send to => the desktop (create a shortcut) "
  3. Return to the Windows desktop
  4. Right-click on the icon on the desktop and now choose " Copy "
  5. Open your Start Menu and look after the Startup folder and right-click and click Open
  6. In the window that opens (Windows explorer), in the right space, in an empty area, right-click and click on " Paste "
  7. If you are successful, you will see the program icon with its name appear in the Startup folder.

To note that:

steps 5 to 6 can be done by dragging and dropping from the desktops to the start-up folder of the start menu.

it seems that it is not possible to start it with the computer in minimized mode (the option run in minimized window mode) does not seem to work.

by clicking on the small bar to minimize the application, for 1 to 2 seconds, your computer freezes. This is a known bug.

And There you go!

If you ever have a similar program but which does not have the aforementioned drawbacks, I am interested!

Open the Control Panel. Click or double-click the Mouse or Mouse Settings icon. In the Mouse Properties window, click the Buttons tab, if not already selected. On the Buttons tab, adjust the slider for the Double-click speed option, then click OK. https://cps-test.info

Right-click the “Start” button and select “Control Panel“. Select “Appearance and Rationalization“. Choose “Specify single- or double-click to open“. In the “Click items as follows” section, choose between “Single click to open an item” or “Double-click to open an item“ https://lovelanguagetest.org

The lack of a link to the program you talk about in the end was annoying, but it inspired me to look up a similar solution in AutoHotkey scripting, doing the same without lots of unnecessary code or even virus. Now the mouse will survive my wrath at least a bit longer.
