Could Mauritania become the first country in Africa to host a NATO military base? And why is China building a naval base in Equatorial Guinea? It symbolizes an ongoing struggle. Let's start with diplomatic exchanges between Mauritania and NATO.” This historic alliance dates back to 1995 when Mauritania joined the NATO Mediterranean Dialogue Partnership Forum. Over the years, cooperation between the two countries has expanded significantly, with Mauritania joining NATO's enhanced defense training program in 2013 and 2022. In particular, Mauritanian President Mohammed Ghazwani received an invitation to the NATO Summit in Madrid, where Mauritania's defense and security capacity building package was approved. This partnership between Mauritania and NATO is symbiotic, fueled in part by their shared history with France. As a French-speaking country, Mauritania has military bases with France, among others. Despite its recent withdrawal from neighboring Mali due to political circumstances, France continues to wield influence over the former territory.

Meanwhile, relations between Mali and Russia are notable. After the French were driven out, Mali took over the Wagner Group, a Russian private security organization. Despite ongoing security problems in central Mali, relations with Russia foster different power dynamics than with France. This is evidenced by Russia's massive military equipment, which promotes an atmosphere of cooperation. However, France perceives Russia's growing presence as a threat to its historical dominance and may consider NATO intervention to counter it.

A survey of the Gulf of Guinea found that the region was plagued by piracy and oil theft, leading to the Nigerian Navy's Falcon Eye initiative, which successfully curbed these challenges. But China's establishment of a naval base in Equatorial Guinea has been questioned. The move is close to that of Nigeria and seems puzzling given Nigeria's efforts to quell insecurity and piracy. China's motives remain speculative. It could be espionage, aiding Chinese trawlers, or other strategic considerations.

This situation highlights the complex relationship between foreign powers and Africa. While international actors pursue their own interests, African leaders must also take responsibility. African leaders often give up land and resources for nominal gain, leading to an over-reliance on foreign aid. To reduce this dependence, African countries need to prioritize effective resource management, invest in education and promote local expertise. In this way, the African continent can transform itself from a recipient of foreign aid to a self-reliant and self-determining donor on the world stage.

Among the complex challenges facing African countries are governance and economic policy. Excessive government spending, wasteful spending and corruption undermine potential progress. Some countries have moved from parliamentary systems to costly presidential systems, increasing the financial burden. Rather, true sovereignty is possible through effective governance, utilization of resources, and investment in human capital.

Fundamentally, a complex interplay of foreign interests, African leadership and global power relations characterizes the development of the continent. To shape a prosperous future, African countries need to show room for action, address domestic challenges and build local capacity. This will help us redefine our role on the international stage and lay the foundation for sustainable progress.

How could africa will be so much deoendent on foreign aid and yet say they are into democracy? there are many African presidents who has been in power for over 15 years and nothing has been done about it. Yet they are part of the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) fighting against people has they thought has tampered with democracy. How can the probems of Africa be olved when our very leaders are part of the ones that have created the problem for many years and still contiue to add the problems. We are in a sad state.
