Dyson Zone: A Unique Wearable Air Purifier and Headphone Combo

Dyson, the renowned British tech company, has recently introduced its latest and most peculiar device yet – the Dyson Zone. This wearable air purifier doubles as a set of wireless noise-canceling headphones, marking Dyson's entry into both the audio and wearable markets. While the Zone's unconventional appearance has attracted some online mockery, it has also piqued curiosity among many, including myself. After trying out the Dyson Zone during a trip to Singapore, I can share my impressions of this intriguing device.

What Using the Dyson Zone Feels Like:

Wearing the Dyson Zone with the air purifier turned on provides a pleasant experience, as cool and clean air gently flows around the nose and mouth. Although it doesn't completely eliminate strong smells, the purifier instills a sense of reassurance, given Dyson's established expertise in air purification. The futuristic aesthetic depicted in online photos translates to an ongoing feeling of novelty while using the Zone.

Furthermore, wearing the Dyson Zone in Singapore did not attract many strange looks or comments, indicating that its appearance may be more accepted in certain locations. It remains to be seen whether New Zealanders would react differently.

Design and Comfort:

The Zone's headphones are slightly heavier than what users might be accustomed to, but they never felt uncomfortable. Their premium build quality contributes to a satisfying overall experience. However, adjusting the visor to the right position in front of the face may necessitate moving the headphones, potentially compromising the comfort of the overhead band. Unfortunately, this limitation does not allow for individual adjustments.

Is the Dyson Zone Worth It?

While this review is not exhaustive, my experience with the Dyson Zone suggests that it is a highly specialized product with limited appeal. I don't expect it to achieve the same level of success as Dyson's vacuum cleaners, traditional air purifiers, or haircare products.

The Zone's air purifier is designed for relatively short usage periods throughout the day, rather than running continuously as one might assume. If the airflow is set to maximum and active noise cancellation is enabled, the battery drains in less than a couple of hours.

While the air purification capability is commendable, the Zone is not a sealed system like an N95 mask, which offers superior filtration and protection against COVID-19 and other particles. Additionally, users can combine a more affordable, high-quality pair of headphones with an N95 mask if desired.

However, it would be premature to dismiss the Zone entirely. As awareness of air quality increases, driven by research and health concerns, some individuals may find value in this device. The Zone's intelligence, as reflected in the accompanying app, continuously monitors air quality and noise levels, providing users with real-time and historical data.

Conclusion:

The Dyson Zone represents a unique and unconventional offering that caters to a niche market. Although I enjoyed my brief experience with the device and recognize its potential for select individuals, it is not a product I would readily recommend to everyone.

With a starting price of NZ$1499 in New Zealand, the Zone's cost is undeniably high compared to other headphones on the market. Nevertheless, the integration of an air purifier into a wearable device sets the Dyson Zone apart from any other option currently available.

As the release of the Dyson Zone approaches in New Zealand, its reception and adoption will likely be influenced by individual preferences, air quality concerns, and the willingness to invest in this unconventional yet innovative technology.
