Apple's software for identifying child pornography on iPhones concerns privacy issues

In reaction to Apple's new child safety protection measures, which were introduced last week, the public's response has been instantly polarized. A new communication safety feature has been added to the Messages program, which is the first piece of news announced today. In an explanation provided by Apple, the company stated that when a child who is a member of an iCloud Family receives or attempts to send sexually improper photos, the system will send the child a notification.

In order to protect children from seeing sexually explicit images, Apple explains that the images will be pixelated and a warning will be presented in the Messages app, indicating that the image "may be disturbing." The child will receive a pop-up notice notifying them of the reason why the photograph is considered sensitive if they choose to "View photo."

After viewing the photograph, a warning pop-up advises the kid that their iCloud Family parent will receive an email "to make sure you're all right," if they want to do so. In addition, a simple link to request additional assistance will be added in the pop-up window for your convenience.

If a child attempts to send an image that is sexually explicit, they will be given with a warning that is nearly identical to the one described above. The company claims that a child under the age of thirteen will be informed before the photo is shared and that the parents will receive an email message should the youngster choose to transmit the photo.

According to Apple's explanation, Messages makes use of on-device machine learning to scan image attachments and assess whether or not a photo is sexually inappropriate. Because iMessage is end-to-end encrypted, Apple does not have access to any of the communications that are sent across the network. The feature will also be available on an opt-in basis for those who wish to use it.

The Monterey software improvements, which include the iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey software upgrades, will make this functionality available "later this year to accounts signed up as families in iCloud," according to Apple. For the time being, however, the feature will only be available in the United States of America.

CSAM detection

Second, and perhaps most importantly, Apple is adopting new measures to prevent the transmission of Child Sexual Abuse Content (CSAM), commonly known as child exploitation material, across the Internet. The word "CSAM" refers to content that depicts sexually explicit acts involving children, according to Apple's definition.

When images saved in iCloud Photos are uploaded to the service, Apple will be able to recognize them as known CSAM photographs, according to information that was partially released earlier today. Once a child has been identified, Apple will contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an entity that serves as a comprehensive reporting agency for CSAM and works closely with law enforcement agencies to locate and locate the child.

Apple has said on multiple occasions that its approach to recognizing CSAM is meant to respect the privacy of its consumers' personal information. If any of the photographs on your device match up with images from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's database of known CSAM images, Apple will do an evaluation on them. Apple's translation of the database from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children into an "unreadable set of hashes that is securely stored on users' devices" makes it perfectly conceivable to execute all the matching on the device itself.
