Industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is currently working on the development of a more affordable successor to its AR headset, with a potential launch in 2025.

According to Kuo, the second generation of the Apple AR headset will come in two distinct models — a high-end version and a much more affordable low-end model.

However, the term “affordable” may be relative, with rumors suggesting a price tag of $3,000 or even higher for the first-generation AR headset.

While the launch of the first-generation AR headset is reportedly behind schedule due to shortages of crucial tools and testing issues, Kuo believes that the likelihood of a spring launch for the Reality Pro is decreasing.

Instead, Kuo predicts that the headset launch alongside iPhone 15 in 3Q23 is becoming more probable, which would mean a September unveiling with devices reaching early adopters before the end of 2023.

Apple’s AR headset is still shrouded in secrecy, and the company is expected to maintain this status quo for several more months.

However, it is known that the first generation of the AR device will feature twin 4K OLED displays, head and eye tracking, gesture control, and a virtual twist on the familiar iOS/iPad-OS interface.

Despite the high price of the first-generation AR headset, Apple is likely banking on the device’s potential to attract developers and end users.

Just like the original iPad or the original Apple Watch, the first version of the AR headset is expected to focus on the device’s potential.

It is unlikely that we will know what the killer AR app is until developers and end users have had a chance to get their hands on it and their heads in it.

As for the second generation of the Apple AR headset, Kuo’s report adds weight to rumors that Foxconn, Apple’s manufacturing partner, is working on a more affordable device version.

While details of the second-generation AR headset are scarce, Kuo’s claim that there will be a high-end version and a more affordable low-end version suggests that Apple aims to cater to a broader range of consumers with varying budgets.

It is unclear what features the second generation of the AR headset will include, but it is safe to assume that Apple will continue to innovate and refine its technology.

The first generation of the AR headset is already packed with impressive features, including the ability to detect and track a user’s head and eye movements, allowing for a more immersive AR experience.

While the second generation of the AR headset is still a few years away, Apple’s continued investment in AR technology clearly shows the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation.

As AR technology advances, we will likely see even more impressive features and applications emerge in future device iterations.

Final Words

While the launch of the first-generation AR headset may be behind schedule, Apple is already working on developing a more affordable successor.

The second generation of the AR headset is expected to come in two models, a high-end version and a more affordable low-end version.

With the first-generation AR headset’s impressive features and potential, the second-generation device will likely continue to innovate and refine AR technology.
