Use These Tips and Tricks to Better Your Experience with the Platform

Though the basics of the Medium platform are easy to understand, there are a few things that are a little more difficult to figure out. I have compiled this information into a list to help new users get the most of their experience.

1. You get paid when Medium members read your articles.

You don’t get paid by claps or comments. The number of followers doesn’t increase your pay either. You only get paid if a Medium member reads your article. This means that in order to increase your pay, you will need to get your work to people that are in the Medium subscription plan. Those that are not in that plan get five free articles before being prompted to pay for a membership.

Also, those that are not in this subscription plan do not contribute to the money that you make unless you get a referral bonus for signing them up for the subscription program. Therefore, if you are trying to make money on writing articles, it may be important to get your articles into the hands of people that have both a membership and time to read them.

2. People that have a Medium subscription have a little green circle around their profile picture.

There are several people that are still testing out the platform to see if they like it, and therefore, they haven’t subscribed. However, in order for writers to understand who the paying members are, Medium has added a green circle around the member’s profile picture. This helps a writer know if they are going to get paid for the engagement of a person or not. If there is no green circle, there is no payment for that person reading an article, clapping on it, or commenting. Though, not all writers care if they are getting paid for engagement, for the ones that do, this is useful information.

3. There is a limit to how may posts you can make per day.

Now, I’m not quite sure what the exact number of posts that you can make is. However, I have noticed that if you comment on someone’s article or respond to a comment on your article, that counts as a post. Therefore, make sure that you are leaving room to write articles as well as using this feature to comment on other people’s work. If you do go past your content limit, I do believe that you can still send articles over to publications. You just can’t publish them directly on your own platform.

4. You can clap up to 50 times per person.

This may just be something new to me, but I recently found out that if you really like an article, you are able to clap up to 50 times. As far as I have seen, there is no limit on how many articles you can do this on, so if you are intrigued by someone’s writing, make sure you give them a clap.

5. If you read other people’s work, they may read your work.

Many people are stuck in a rut, wondering how they are going to get more readers. The answer is simple. Usually, if you read the articles of others, they will read yours. Now, this may not happen right away, and it may not happen all the time. However, I have personally seen my statistics go up after engaging with other writers. Also, by doing this, you really do get to read some good content. You would be surprised by how many interesting articles are on this platform.

6. Get social to stay social.

Sometimes, it is difficult to tell which Medium members are on the site regularly and which aren’t. However, there is something to help with this. Many Medium members take part in social media groups on Facebook. This helps them share their articles with interested members and get feedback on the writing process. Therefore, if you are trying to stay in the know and see what other people are working on, it might be beneficial to check social media.

7. There is a daily follower limit.

You are allowed to follow 125 people a day. This can be useful if you are looking for new reading material or new people to read your articles. This also helps you build your audience. Therefore, in order to make this useful, you may want to add more followers every day so that you have more people that you can network with and a diverse number of articles in your recommendation list.

These are just some new items that I learned about the Medium platform. By understanding how the platform works and what your limitations are, you have a better chance at succeeding in your writing endeavors.
