Literary landscapes

The best fictional worlds are complete worlds, whether it’s Narnia, Wonderland, Yoknapatawpha County, or Salinas, California. The novels I love give me a landscape, a complete town with restaurants and grocery stores and courthouses and getaway destinations with real people who move around in them.

It’s no easy task, especially if you rely on imagination alone and don’t give memory space to breathe and unfold. If you’ve been reading my fiction in Critique and Chapters, you know that I am trying to bring Garden City to life. I’ve pulled everything because I’m ready to start organizing it into the first novel of many I intend to write from inside this community and everywhere it reaches.

I may post a scene or character sketch here and there, but I’m hungry for a book deal and know how publishers feel about previously published work, so I’m going to err on the side of caution with this.
