The Winner's of Tim’s July 8th Birthday Challenge

I asked three friends to read all of the birthday poem submissions and make the selections so I wouldn't be the one choosing. After reading everything, they couldn't agree on a single favorite. Instead, they chose these three poems to be read as part of the celebration.

These aren't ranked, and there isn't an overall winner. Each one stood out for its own reasons. Below are the three selected poems, along with the judges' comments.

Sara Wilson — A World of Birthday Fairies

Sara Wilson’s poem stands out for how vivid and lively it feels. It creates a full birthday scene filled with fairies, light, and nature, almost like the celebration is happening in front of you as you read it.

The repetition and rhythm give it a smooth, flowing feel that works especially well when spoken. It naturally pulls listeners into the moment.

Rick Henry Christopher — A Birthday Toast in Motion

Rick Henry Christopher’s poem has a strong spoken quality to it. It feels like something meant to be read directly to a group of people, like a toast at a birthday gathering.

It moves easily, has a clear rhythm, and builds toward a moment that naturally fits a birthday gathering and invites everyone in. We all loved the videos that came with the poem.

Veva Jacques — Another Year Around the Sun

Veva Jacques offers a softer, more thoughtful piece. It focuses on another year passing and simply appreciating the moment for what it is.

It brings a quieter tone to the set and gives a calm pause in the overall celebration.

Recognition and Appreciation

Each of these three writers will receive first place recognition, along with a $10 tip as a thank-you for their work.

This challenge wasn't about ranking one above another. Each poem works in its own way, and together they create a nice balance, something visual and lively, something spoken and energetic, and something calm and reflective.

Thank you to everyone who wrote a poem to help me celebrate my birthday this year. I have really enjoyed reading all of them, and I appreciate the time and creativity that went into each one.
