Behind the Page: #1
For the first edition of my Behind the Page series, I will discuss my poem, "Saturday Afternoon". You can read it here: I wrote the poem "Saturday Afternoon" back in 2009. It was first published in the now-defunct online journal First Reads, based in the country of St. Vincent. It and another of my poems, "Morning Glow", appeared there together. Later in 2010, both poems were included in my mixed genre chapbook, "Beyond the Horizon: Journeys in Poetry and Prose".

Does language create thought, or does thought create language?
Every time I dip my toes into the swirling waters of how our chatter intertwines with our noggin's workings, I'm totally spellbound. It's like standing at the crossroads of a never-ending debate: does the lingo we toss around shape the contours of our thoughts, or is it our thoughts that give birth to the words we end up using? Along comes the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, throwing a curveball into my mental musings. This brain-poking theory suggests our speech doesn't just give a nudge to our thinking—it might actually be the architect behind it. It's a head-scratcher, making me wonder if the boundaries of my own thought process are corralled by the words that have been handed down through generations. It's an enthralling, slightly eerie notion to wrap your head around.

The Brilliant Mind of a Vocal Creator
I became a content creator on Vocal in March 2018 and celebrated five years of being on this amazing platform. Since joining Vocal, I've had one story featured as a Top Story (August 2023) and a plethora of tips, which I appreciate very much. 2018 wasn't a great year for me personally, as I was homeless, jobless, and going through other personal issues. During those dark times, I was at my local library and all of a sudden, I ran into a site, which would later be Vocal. When I was in grade school, I loved writing my thoughts in notebooks. As I've stated in previous stories, my household and part of my childhood was hostile, abusive, and toxic. Decades later, writing gave me an opportunity to let my imagination fly, but at the same time, sharing my thoughts with everyone online. There is no age limit on being creative. During those aforementioned darker times, writing gave me an outlet to formulate on topics that matter to me and inform others on. Every year on October 20 is the National Day on Writing, celebrating writing in all forms. According to numerous online sources, there are positive benefits of jotting down your reflections on either pen and paper or digitally. These pick-me-ups such as helping you become more creative, improving as a writer, learning more about yourself, reducing stress, and building up your confidence.
