The Posthumous Author - The Prompt: Imagine you became famous after your death. Write the author profile critics construct around your life, work, and legacy.

Reputation is often shaped after the fact. This challenge asks you to step outside your own work and imagine how it might be interpreted without you there to explain it.

Write an author profile set after your death, as if critics are piecing together your life, work, and legacy. The voice can be analytical, speculative, or even contradictory.

What gets emphasized, misunderstood, or invented? What story do others build around your work, and how closely does it reflect anything you intended?

It was Christmas and Denise received the perfect gift for December in Minnesota. The scarf and hat are that perfect gift. I'm sorry to report she wasn't alive to really appreciate the warmth it would give her in 2025, and beyond. 

Denise struggled with heart problems and succumbed on December 30, 2025.

Denise Estey Lindquist was born in 1954, and lived her entire life in Minnesota. In her retirement she resided in Warba, Minnesota and she described Warba, as "A place my husband brought me to live with farmers and swamp people."

She was known to say, "There is nothing better to do in Warba, so I write every day." She published daily on Vocal Media and Medium.com. She published 62 Top Stories in five years. And before you get too excited, please know that she received a $5.00 prize for each top story.

Denise self-published many books that we are guessing will soon be made into books for more people to enjoy. Her interest wasn't in making money with her writing. She was retired and was told how difficult publishing can be, and all that goes along with it.

She would say, "I wrote most of my material for memorials, for family birthdays, Christmas, graduation, wedding gifts, and for fundraisers." Denise enjoyed writing booklets as handouts for training she did with others.

In 2024, she received a grant to write a book about conversations with Everyday Native American Women Elders. She was working on this book when she died. She was hoping it would be picked up by the Minnesota Historical Society. And now it may.

What might have gotten even more attention has been her poetry and rhyme. Denise started rhyming when her grandson was 15 or so and he is now 27. He asked his grandma to write him some rap music.

Brandon decided at about age 17, that he no longer wanted his grandma to write rap music having told her that she will never understand the language. She was also told by a young medicine man rapper to consider spoken word.

In spite of that, Denise continued to write a Poem a Day in February with her writing group, and to write rhyme on the 8th of every month. She also responded to most challenges that Vocal Media had that were poetry related.

She was beginning to write a book for Hazelden's bookstore about Ripples. How being a woman in long term recovery can ripple out to help others that are struggling with life.

Denise started her recovery in North Branch and moved to Bemidji where she helped build an alano building and hall, started an adult child of alcoholics meeting (ACOA), and a narcotics anonymous (NA) meeting.

She encouraged a gamblers anonymous (GA) to start a meeting in the area, in the mid 80s, due to clients who were switching addictions. At the time it was bingo and pull tabs. Now, all meetings are still there after some 40+ years.

Before retirement Denise worked as a substance abuse counselor and a mental health therapist. After retirement she worked as a culture consultant, at mental health crisis shelters, and training primarily counselors/therapists working with Native American people.

Denise would often talk about writing as healing and about how poetry/rhyme helps us with our trauma, grief and loss work without even knowing it. Denise would often talk about art in general and writing as an art and how art is so very healing.

She has friends and family that are writers also who are anxious to put some of her work into making the best sellers lists. You can look forward to more from Denise Estey Lindquist. Books coming to a bookstore near you. And perhaps a movie or two.
