Writing Through Pain

Today we bid farewell to one of the most outstanding artists of our time. Although Sun Bee is a nom de plume and no one knows the artist's real name, her poetry resonated with powerful insights into a human nature and emotions that leaped out of the page. Not many had a chance to discover, but whoever did was met with strong images of love lost and family drowning in dysfunction of their own making. Her vivid imagery caught an eye in her fiction, where all of her life troubles found its right place touched by her unique hand. Unfulfilled painter in her youth, with the only oil painting left behind her, hiding in the vastness of her private possessions after being brutally taken away from her parents’ house. Once she learned to paint with words, the world around her transformed. In a tangled loop of her secret laboratory troubled characters had their blast chasing invisible shadows, their friends and enemies. Her descriptions haunted multiple pages with their sparkling colours as if they would crowd the emptiness of a white canvas. Although horror wasn’t her genre, she incorporated terror of her daily existence into her books with a mastery worth the greatest. As if during the meeting with the worst beast, she was never afraid of obstacles and was always eager to meet them, even if that meant adding an extra stride to her step. Her unconventional thinking didn’t bring her many fans as progressive mind of a trailblazer rarely does. Her stubbornness in achieving her goals had brought her an abundant array of followers.

Building Relationships

Okay. So, what we’re talking about here? A woman who never married and didn’t hesitate to steal the husbands of others? A lover who used all of her boyfriends for the sake as elusive as writing? Some might say she did, but the sad truth is that they’ve used her too, for money or sex or both, so perhaps we should forgive her and allow her seeking some sense of fairness or even revenge? Was her writing a rebellious attitude towards her failed attempt at life, when she refused to comply with the societal standards? But was she able to fulfil them anyway with her first nervous breakdown at the age of twenty and another one following twenty years later? Was she surrounded by loving family and friends at those times? No. It is unclear whether she pushed them away or they left her first. We know, however, that in these sensitive cases the right people and the right kind of help is required to get better. Her life and work suggest that, in the absence of genuine support, she created such support inside the fiction. Her villains are so close to us as the common people who had lost their way. They are driven to terrible acts by psychological pressures living inside them, impossible to get rid of dark past to pursue bright future. Were these villains inspired by real people from her life, or were they entirely her creations? We may never know as all of her family is gone and she herself always avoided talking about this thinnest line between her life and her work.

One thing remains clear. Her legacy is stunning as for the person without strong literary background. Yet more important than the past is what we leave behind.

Emotional Worth

Born in the city, but growing up in a small town, her chances of becoming a writer were somewhat curbed. Creative writing classes were unavailable at her school. She excelled in literature, yet despite her perfect grammar and punctuation, she never understood the concept of interpretation. As an aspiring author herself, she believed that meaning stood beyond the written words, following the examples set by her favourite authors - Patricia Highsmith, Sylvia Plath, Cormac McCarthy, and Charles Bukowski - to prove that her own life was extraordinary.

Her solitude fuelled her creativity, born of the pain from a world that misunderstood her. Lacking parental support for her writing ambitions, she moved abroad to pursue her dreams. It wasn’t easy at first. As a new émigré, she had to learn to earn her share in the society who had little regard for her. Years of hard work led to financial reward but left her literary goals unfulfilled. Writing remained her escape, helping her continue what she couldn’t in her homeland. Her second homeland grew more distinct over time through her experiences.

Her debut, ‘Towards No Future’, became an international bestseller, selling a million copies worldwide and being translated into twenty languages. It was shortlisted for the CWA Dagger Awards 2024, proving that there’s a future for authors like her.

Her second book, ‘Plumbed Out Truth’, published in 2025, documents her tenant’s struggles in a fictional world soaked in corruption and betrayal. It was an internet sensation, gaining recognition for its unique ability to combine real life and fictional settings.

Her upcoming posthumous novel, ‘Well Castrated Dreams’, proves that even after her death, she’s full of surprises. Her dream outlived her.

Today we treasure our national icon. A legacy her friends would value, and her enemies would envy.
