Introduction to Jon Fosse

Jon Fosse hit the grounds of history yesterday by winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Norwegian playwright is one of the most celebrated contemporary writers. He is known for his minimalistic approaches used in the plays. Moreover, his plays are the most widely staged of any contemporary playwright in the world.

Fosse’s work is often compared to the previous Nobel Prize winner playwrights such as Samuel Beckett due to the use of simple language, rhythmic style, and silences to deliver the message smoothly. This conversational style enables the silences to speak louder.

The writing style of Jon Fosse

In addition to this, Fosse’s writing has been praised for the usage of silence rather than the content. The visionary approaches are visible in the use of the striking balance between silences and words. It seems that the unsaid words roar more than the written words.

Reviews and remarks on Jon Fosse

The Swedish Academy said the 64-year-old was honored ‘for his innovative plays and prose, which give voice to the unsayable’.

The jury also pointed out Jon Fosse’s efforts in presenting the reality with the dramatic actions. No doubt, he has applied radical language, but conveyed the human emotions of anxiety and powerlessness, like Beckett.

Norwegian public broadcaster NRK published Jon Fosse’s action. According to their report, ‘he said he was “surprised but also not’” after his name had been mentioned in Nobel speculation for several years’.

Along with the plays, Fosse has written numerous essays, novels, poetry collections, children’s books, and translations. They all served their purpose, but the innovative approach toward the plays helped him to mark history.

Anders Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee, claimed that Fosse’s “ability to evoke man’s loss of orientation, and how this paradoxically can provide access to a deeper experience, close to divinity” bring the Nobel Prize closer to him.

Who is Annie Enraux?

Annie Enraux was born in rural France during World War II. She belongs to a poor background but turned her family status after receiving her primary education.

Annie began her career as a governess and continued her studies along her career. She is also serving as a professor at various institutes. She is inspired by Simone De Beauvoir and started to contribute her thoughts in literature, which enabled her to win the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature.

Writing Style of Annie Ernaux

Initially, her books were published in French; and later on, translated into other European languages. In her works, a reader learns about the color of rural life and class differences via the use of simple language.

Annie Ernaux also penned books from the viewpoints of men and women based on gender disparities, whereas she composed works with both sexes, classes, and social distinctions in mind.
