‘The Henna Artist’ by Alka Joshi is a novel set in 1950s Jaipur, India.
It’s about Lakshmi Shastri, a henna artist, from Brahmin community. Henna is a plant leaf paste applied on palms and feet by Indian women for aesthetic reasons.
Lakhmi has left an abusive marriage, an act of courage, and shame for her family. Now, she is building her own house and independence, by serving wealthy clients. How she gives herbal powders and potions for women trying to get rid of unwanted pregnancies. How, she learns about a little sister and shoulders her responsibilities. It's a vivid and immersive story, that tells how the social fabric was, in that era.
It’s a nice read. I recommend.
