Road Safety, Pelican Crossing Zones

Staying safe

How many times have you crossed a busy road on a Pelican crossing seeing that green stick person and hearing that ‘beep beep,’ only to watch in utter amazement as some crazy driver simply ignores the fact that his pelican light will be showing red?

There is not any excuse, RED means STOP.

Yet somehow that driver appears to believe that he/she is free to abuse that simple but absolute rule.

After all, if a driver is looking ahead then they should be in a position to plainly see that amber light that is letting them know that it is time to slow down and prepare to stop, right?

Wrong.

Some drivers just don’t care either way.

As if that was not all of the pedestrian’s worries when it comes to trying to cross a busy road, particularly at a government-designated crossing zone.

Don’t driving schools and driving test examiners teach you, drivers, anything about safe driving then?

Or is it simply that you reckon you can do what the hell you want once you have passed your driving test then?

I’m a disabled driver, and I know the rules.

I strictly follow them.

So, what makes you think that you don’t have to?

Do you simply think that the rules don’t apply to you at all?

But, just to add to the annoyance of those drivers who think they are immune to the law, things get slightly worse for the pedestrian.

Sure, for any able-bodied person, which can be enough time to safely navigate from one side of the road to the other.

No chicken joke please🤣.

But hang on, what about those of us that are disabled (physically or mentally) or a child? Six to seven seconds then becomes a real challenge.

Sure, in the ideal world, those car drivers are going to be patient and allow you that additional time to safely get across.

That’s the ideal world NOT the real world.

Is it not about time that those people in power with the position to change the timings on pelican crossings do just that… reassess the safety concerns of them now?

Probably not.

Because at the end of the day, do they actually care?

Again, probably not.

Yet is it not about time that they should?

What do you think about the state of road safety as it stands today (particularly in the United Kingdom?) What are the crossing safety times in your country where you are reading this from - I would love to know.

In the 21st century is it not well about time that we should all be considering what is not just about the safety and well-being of vehicle drivers, but of the pedestrians that need to cross our road networks too?
